The Regency of langkat is famous as a tourist attraction because of the Orang utan Rehabilitation Center in Bukit Lawang, in the sub regency of Bohorok. It is also famous for it's plantation crops such as chocolate, palms, rubber trees, oranges, etc. There is also huge oil mining company operation in Pangkalan Brandan and Pangkalan Susu. The other tourist attractions are the Azizi Mosque in Tanjung Pura, the Botanical Garden in Sikundur in Besitang, and natural caves such as The water cave, Ship cave and Paturizal cave.

Orang utan Rehabilitation Centre

Bukit Lawang (the nearest village to the orang utan rehabilitation centre) is about 3 hours by car or motorcycle from Medan. It's main attractions are the orang utan rehabilitation centre, beautiful view, the tropical forest . Before entering the orang utan rehabilitation centre, visitors should get a permit from the PHPA (The National Parks Office) in Bukit Lawang. The permit is valid for seeing the orang utan at the feeding site and for trekking in the surrounding forest.

Bat Cave

There are other interesting activities for tourists. These range from activities within a 30 minutes walk to a 3 day walk through the jungle from Bukit lawang. The walk to the Bat cave takes about 30 minutes, passing through rubber plantations along the river near Bukit Lawang. The Bat cave is a place for many kinds of bats and small animals which need a special environment. Since this cave is not part of the National Park, no legal guides of permits are reguired to go there. All you need along is a flashlight (torch)

Jungle Trekking and Camping

From the feeding site of the orang utan in Bukit Lawang, tourist can continue their activities by trekking in the jungle through a well - planned route of about one day's walk. Some tourists want to combine trekking and camping.

You can often see monkeys and birds that live on the ground, and other big birds with long interesting tails. Bukit Lawang has a lot of cheap accomodations which serve European, Chinese, and Indonesia food . Tourists who come to Bukit Lawang can visit the feeding site of Orang utan (twice a day at about 3pm & 8am) and is about 30 minute walk from the office in town.

The Bahorok River

The other interesting activity for tourists is to enjoy the clear water of Bohorok river by floating down the river on inner tubes. Tourists can rent inner tubes cheaply from almost any losmen. Some local people also provide the tubes. It takes about 3 hours to drift down the river to the town of Bohorok where buses can take tourists back to Bukit Lawang.

 

 

 

 

 

Rafting down the Wampu River

An Adventurous activity in Langkat is rafting down to Wampu river. Trips can be organized from Bukit Lawang or by a travel bureau from Medan. The informations about the rafting trip is provided in the Bohorok river visitor's centre which was founded by the corporation of PHPA, Frankfurt Zoological Society and WWF. Tourist can also get informations about the conditions in the forest, the mini-library, mini-exhibition and other interesting souvenirs at night, the Bahorok Visitor Centre has videos orang utan and other jungle wildlife. The showings are free.
