Tanjung Balai, which has very important role in water transportation, is surrounded by sea. Since the 19th century the port of Teluk Nibung port has been a part of Tanjung Balai Municipality. It was always used by the Dutch shipping company and was known as KPM ( Konklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij ). It was also used by the shipping company called Horrison & Crosfield trading Company which operated in North Sumatera. Both companies were the main transportation for various types of plantation crops in North Sumatera.
Visitors can fish in this place there are several restaurants that provide seafood which can be eaten on the banx of the river. In addition, the area around the Asahan river bank and Nibung Bay has been set asidde as industrial areas with 500 hectares for future expansion in Nibung Bay sub-regency.

There are also banks, trading offices, transportation, company offices, government offices, trains for foreight goods, public buses, trucks, telephones, ware houses, industrial facilities and hotels. Nibung Bay is a visa free eastern gateway for tourists, Tanjung Balai, a fish producing city, is famous for its shells. The fish are consumed by local consumers and also sent to Malaysia and Singapore. For recreation, it provides mechanized boats called " Water taxis" which are available for recreation and can be used to cross the Silau and Asahan rivers. It also provides express boats to Tanjung Balai / Nibung Bay and port klang.
