The Town

Ericeira is a typical Portuguese town, comprising an old centre, with narrow cobbled streets and traditional blue and white fishermen's houses, and more modern residential districts. The focus of the town is a spectacularly situated working fishing port, and "fishermen's beach", which sit at the base of a cliff above which sits the town centre itself.

The town centre is packed with restaurants, bars, cafes and shops. Sitting in the main square and relaxing over endless coffees and a newspaper is the order of the day for many.

Eating out is central to the Portuguese way of life, and Ericeira is particularly well served for this with literally dozens of restaurants serving good quality cheap meals. Children are universally welcomed in Portuguese restaurants.

Ericeira is well served for nightlife also, with a number of bars and two nightclubs. Most cafes and bars remain open until at least 2am.

An important factor in Ericeira's favour as a holiday destination is that it is overwhemingly a destination for local Portuguese tourists, of all age ranges. There is no danger of encountering here the groups of noisy and heavy-drinking northern European youths which can be such a problem in the resorts of the Algarve in southern Portugal.
