The Region

Ericeira is ideally situated for a stay that goes beyond a mere beach holiday, being within easy reach of a number of important cultural and historical centres.

Mafra is the principal town of the region and lies 15 minutes drive to the East (inland) of Ericeira. It is dominated by the Convento de Mafra, a National Palace, which was completed in the year 1730 having taken 13 years to construct. Containing almost 700 rooms, including a unique ancient library, the palace is one of the most significant historical buildings in the country.

The historic hilltop town of Sintra lies about 20 minutes drive South from Ericeira. The town is packed with sites of interest, including a castle and four historic palaces.

Fatima, which can be reached in about 90 minutes, is one of the world's most significant Catholic shrines where it is believed the Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children in the early 20th century. Upwards of a million pilgrims have been known to descend on Fatima for important religious celebrations.

Lisbon, Portugal's capital, is about 40 minutes drive from Ericeira. The city is full of historical sights, shopping opportunities and nightlife, and benefits from arguably the most beautiful setting of any European capital city. No trip to Portugal is complete without a visit to the Castelo de Sao Jorge (Castle of Saint George) which dominates the city and provides spectacular views over the river and harbour.
