Activities A wide variety of sporting and leisure activities are available in and around Ericeira. First and foremost are the beaches, the most local of which are ideal swimming beaches, with calm seas and great sand for the children. These include Fisherman's beach, next to the fishing port, and the North beaches. Ericeira is also an important centre for surfing, and during summer months surf schools are available for children and adults. One of these is based at Foz do Lizandro beach, a few minutes south of the town (see www.ericeirasurf.com). Slightly further afield (around 5-10 minutes drive) can be found some of the wildest and most unspoilt beaches in Europe, many of which are popular with local surfers. Indeed, Praia de Ribeira d'Ilhas hosts national surf championships each year, and Praia de Coxos boasts a world class point break (according to globalsurfers.com). Around a half hour's drive from the town is the spectacular Penha Longa golf course - one of the best in Portugal (see www.penhalonga.com). Ericeira is perfectly situated for exploring some of the most signficant cultural and historical centres in Portugal with easy day trips. These are described in more detail in the section on "The Region". Finally, perhaps the most enjoyable and rewarding activity available is simply soaking up the atmosphere of this charming town, with its spectacularly situated active fishing port, its narrow cobbled streets, its myriad cafes, bars and restaurants and its easy-going lifestyle with a totally genuine Portuguese flavour. |
