Here we go for another year. The first round
looks to be a cracker with plenty of tough games.
HIGHLANDERS v BLUES
Both teams will be looking to improve on last years efforts. This
promises to be tough and tight and is likely to split the tipsters
down the middle and test their allegiances. As usual, there is a
plethora of hype and hot air coming out of Auckland but at home I
give the edge to the Highlanders who will destroy a fragile Blues
front row.
Prediction: Highlanders
BRUMBIES v CRUSADERS
No Mehrts, no chance. The Brumbies have injury worries of their
own but with the home advantage and revenge as a motivation they
will be too strong for the slow-starting Crusaders.
Prediction: Brumbies
WARATAHS v CHIEFS
The clash of the under-achievers. The Waratahs often start the
season well only to fade as the heat goes on. The Chiefs don't
tend to do anything well. Look out for some pretty muddled rugby.
Prediction: Waratahs
REDS v HURRICANES
The Reds look distinctly under-manned this year. Although the
Hurricanes are without Jonah, I expect their backline to cut loose
in conditions that should suit them.
Prediction: Hurricanes
STORMERS v CATS
This meeting of the top two South African sides may prove to be
crucial at the end of the round-robin. The Stormers look to be the
more complete team and at home should just have the edge - but
beware the Mains man! For those of you with a gambling
streak, draws most commonly occur in games between two South
African sides.
Prediction: Stormers
SHARKS v BULLS
The battle of the minnows. Away from Pretoria the Bulls won't be
up for it in this wooden-spoon clash. Don't expect the Sharks to
win any more. Promises to be a shocker. Don't watch if easily
offended.
Prediction: Sharks
