Tsunami QT devastates the Picks field and leaves just one survivor

By the time the powerful waves of Tsunami QT were finished hammering the Picks coastline on Sunday, there was no one left alive in the 2004 title chase but a 39-year-old woman who was dancing up a storm.  That super survivor was QT Pie, who celebrated her third Sunday Football Picks championship in just eight years of membership.

QT's unrelenting waves of impressive picks in the second half of the Silver Anniversary season ended up drowning her rivals.  She overcame a six-game deficit to post a league-best 149-81 record -- three games better than Mark, 14 ahead of Blaine, 15 above Ali, 17 more than Nicki, and 18 in front of D.J.  Not once all season did QT have the week's worst record, and that matched Mark's feat in 2000.  "I told you in the Week 8 Picks story that QT was going to come from behind and win the championship, so you shouldn't be surprised at all," said CBS News anchor Dan Rather.

QT delivered her death blow seven days after a tsunami devastated South Asia, killing at least 200,000 people in 11 countries and leaving 5 million people homeless.  The most powerful earthquake in four decades ripped a fault line beneath the Indian Ocean roughly 100 miles from Sumatra, creating tremendous waves that even destroyed communities 3,000 miles away on the east coast of Africa.  Rescue and relief efforts are coming from around the world.

Rescue efforts were unsuccessful for those in the path of Tsunami QT, which claimed its final victim in Week 17 when Mark's Lions couldn't convert a fourth-down play against the Titans just 16 yards from the end zone.  That incomplete pass gave QT the Picks crown officially at 3:16 p.m. Central Standard Time on January 2, 2005.  Five bags of Andes chocolate mints were all hers to enjoy!  The generous winner is sharing her grand prize with family members.

"Several of my (censored) teams didn't get their (censored) jobs done this year," said third-place Blaine, who now owes the kitchen jar another 50 cents to adhere to the family's New Year's resolution.

In the battle of the troublesome twins, Ali edged Nicki by two games this season by winning three of four disagreements on Sunday.  In the final game Sunday night, Ali's Giants scored a touchdown with 11 seconds left to stun Nicki's Cowboys 28-24.  D.J. almost escaped last place, but her Falcons blew a two-point conversion as time expired in Seattle, and her Raiders fumbled the ball away at the 2-yard line in the waning moments against the Jaguars.  If she knew that, she might owe the jar some money, too.

Looking ahead to the 2005 season, the Sunday Football Picks welcomes rookie geocacher Trevor as its newest member!  He turns 9 this month and becomes the seventh active Picks competitor.  During his final practice week of picks, Trevor announced, "I picked the Bengals because I know Terrell Owens is injured and the Eagles will be resting their starters for the playoffs."  The 7-8 Bengals then crushed the 13-2 Eagles 38-10 in Philadelphia.  Trevor appears ready for prime time.
