No on Prop 66
Proposition 66 will restore the original intention for
the Three Strikes
Law. It was made to keep violent or serious crimes such as murder,
kidnapping, and rape or child molestation out of the streets of
California. But the fact was that not only did violent and serious
crimes was apart of the law, it also has nonviolent and petty offenses
such as stealing a tape, a little bit of food, or some t-shirts.
Most of the people sentence for life due to the Three Strikes Law
committed a crime that was nonviolent or petty offense. This will
fix this problem by changing the law to only violent or serious
crimes. This will help free people who have been sentence to 25-to-life
in prison for having a nonviolent or petty offense in their second
and third strike.
Pros: Proposition 66 will prevent
many things that will help California financially which consist
of: prevention of the clogging of judiciary systems, prevention
on high amounts of money paid for trials and will prevent clogging
in the prisons.
Cons: On the other hand, this might
be good for California; it also initiates a re-sentence for convicted
felons, allowing criminals to reduce their jail time, because
Proposition 66 applies retroactively making it severe to the
community. The Proposition needs to be revised because it is
dangerous to count felony strikes by one strike per prosecution,
instead of one strike per conviction, because the felon can be
convicted of many murders and yet only get one strike.
