(The Chameleon Project)
![]() |
The Mutations Capoeira House (Casa de Capoeira Mutações) is an independent social organization whose work is cultural and philanthropic. Founded on July 29th, 1994, the organization is non-profit and is supported by classes, associates, and donations. Its mission is to motivate the members of the community to practice good citizenship. The Mutations Capoeira House presents the CHAMELEON PROJECT – AN ALTERNATIVE WAY OF LIFE, in accordance with letter D of its statute. This project focuses on concern for the environment, respect for Mother Earth, and alternative therapies to promote self-sufficiency. The objective of this initiative is to aid in the expansion of human consciousness. Playing capoeira is just one of several approaches we adopt in order to put into practice principles which harmonize human beings both with themselves and the world at large. In this process, exchanging experiences is key. The Mutations Capoeira House is not tied to any political party, sect, religion, organization or institution; it does not wish to enter into any controversies; it supports any endeavor which promotes life as a whole. WE ARE GOING TO NEED EVERYONE – this project is meant for all those who strive to bring about a better world.
Justification: The lack of public space available for sports and leisure and the socio-economic difficulties which prevent us from associating ourselves with a club have led us to generate low-cost alternative projects in order to provide our children with recreational activities – with the help of partnerships and outside support. These activities include: capoeira, bicycle excursions, screenings of educational videos, scavenger hunts, music and poetry contests, lectures on various topics, workshops in drawing, painting, crafts, etc.
Objective: Human beings are largely the product of the influences they receive. The formation of their personalities is profoundly tied to their environment. Experiencing healthy environments produces healthy habits in the developing human. In order to carry on our work with dignity a collective effort is necessary, requiring the collaboration of the community, neighborhood association, private initiative and government agencies. .

It consists of a chameleon, the Rose of the Winds, the recycling symbol, two capoeiristas and a berimbau. The CHAMELEON represents the human capacity to adapt to biodiversity. The ROSE OF THE WINDS stands for the human being’s freedom to wander in any direction she or he chooses. The RECYCLING SYMBOL indicates the ability to relearn and reuse what had been thrown out. The CAPOEIRISTAS stand for the non-verbal language of the body, which is a universal form of communication, and the BERIMBAU determines the rhythm of this symbiosis. |
