Songs of the Mutations Capoeira House

LADAINHA or QUADRA:

When a ladainha or quadra is started, the capoeiristas must stay respectfully listening, and the capoeiristas who are at the foot of the berimbau only begin to play when the singer, having reached the end of the story that s/he is telling says: D a volta ao mundo (Go around the world), starts to sing a corrida, or gives a signal with the berimbau. Examples of ladainhas: Favela: Resduo Humano (Ghetto: Human Waste), Cidado do Mundo (World Citizen), Magia (Magic), Idade de Brincar (Age for Playing), etc.

The Quadra is composed of four lines as its name indicates, and the procedure is the same as for the ladainha. Example of a quadra:

NO LAO NINGUM ME PANHA
(FOLCLORE)
No-one catches me in the snare

I!
EU COMPREI TODO TEMPERO!
S FALTA FARINHA E BANHA!
EU NO CAIO EM ARAPUCA!
NO LAO NINGUM ME PANHA!
VIVA MUTAES!
I VIVA MUTAES!
i!
I bought all the seasoning!
All thats missing is flour and lard!
I dont fall in Arapuca!
No one catches me in a snare!
Long live Mutaes!
I long live Mutaes!

ENTRY SONG or LOUVAO:
Where all the participants of the roda respond to the verses in chorus, before the game starts.
Example of a Louvao:

- CORO: I, SALVE A MUTAES, CAMAR

- CORO: I, VIVA O BRASIL, CAMAR
- I VIVA MEU DEUS
- CORO: I, VIVA MEU DEUS, CAMAR
- I VOLTA DO MUNDO
- CORO: I, VOLTA DO MUNDO, CAMAR

- Long live Mutaes

- I, long live Brazil
- Chorus: I, long live Brazil, my friend
- I, long live God
- Chorus: I, long live God, my friend
- I, around the world
- Chorus: I, around the world, my friend

Onthe instruments, from left: Mestre Cafun, Mestre Tico Camaleo, Mestre Borracha

CORRIDOS:
The singer is not concerned with telling any story and the chorus participation is immediate. As with the different berimbau rhythms, the corrido contributes to determine the pace and quality of the game.
Examples of corridos: O Milnio (The Millenium), L na Casa de Capoeira Mutaes )There in the Mutations House), O Canto do Batizado (The Song of the Batizado), Entre Palmas e Cantos (Between Claps and Songs), etc.

MAGIA

O MESTRE DOS GRANDES MESTRES
ELE O BERIMBAU
ELE TOCA A ANGOLA
E TAMBM REGIONAL

CAPOEIRA POESIA
 MAGIA E MUITO MAIS
SUA GINGA, SUA DANA
 COISA QUE SATISFAZ

FOI JOGANDO CAPOEIRA
TERMINEI POR CONHECER
A RESISTNCIA DE UM POVO
QUE LUTOU PARA VIVER CAMAR

GALO J CANTOU
I, GALO J CANTOU CAMAR
VIVA MUTAES

Magic

The master of the great masters
Is the Berimbau
It plays Angola
And also Regional

Capoeira is poetry
Its magic and much more
Its ginga, its dance
Are things which satisfy

It was through playing capoeira
That I got to know
The resistence of a people
That fought in order to live, my friend

The cock just crowed
I, the cock just crowed, my friend
I, Long live Mutaes
I, Long live Mutaes, my friend
I, around the world
I, around the world, my friend

FAVELA: RESDUO HUMANO

QUANDO EU PENSO EM IGUALDADE
VEJO QUE ELA UMA ILUSO
NAS FAVELAS DESTE MUNDO
EU S VEJO A EXPLORAO

OS OPERRIOS SE ACABAM
TRABALHANDO, MEU IRMO
NO SABE O QUE LAZER
TENDO QUE SOFRER EM VO

 VERDADE MEU COLEGA,
VEJA QUE TRISTE ILUSO:
TRABALHAR DE DIA NOITE
PR PODER COMPRAR O PO

NOSSOS FIILHOS SEM ESCOLA
SEM ABRIGO E SEM PERDO,
QUANDO EU ENCARO A REALIDADE,
EU NO TENHO OPO.

O MEU CANTO S LAMENTO
QUE VEM DO MEU CORAO
I
VIVA MEU DEUS
I
VIVA MEU DEUS CAMAR
VIVA MUTAES
I VIVA MUTAES CAMAR

Ghetto: Human Waste

When I think about equality
I see its an illusion
In the guettos of this world
I see only exploitation

The workers exhaust themselves
Working, my friend
They dont know what leisure is
Having to suffer in vain

Its true, my friend,
See what a sad illusion::
To have to work day and night
To be able to buy bread

Our children without schools
Without shelters, without pardon
When I face reality,
I dont have any option.

My song is only a lamentation
That comes from my heart
I
Long live God
I
Long live God, my friend
Long live Mutaes
I Long live Mutaes, my friend.

CIDADO DO MUNDO

MEU IRMOZINHO DE CAPOEIRA
OUA BEM COM ATENO
O PLANETA QUE VIVEMOS
TODO ELE UMA NAO

NA FRICA OU NO BRASIL
NA RSSIA OU NO JAPO
NESTE MUNDO DE MEU DEUS
O QUE VALE A UNIO

CAPOEIRA UM JOGO
PR MENINO, HOMEM E MULHER
S NO JOGA CAPOEIRA
QUEM NO SABE OU QUEM NO QUER

VOU VIVENDO NESTE MUNDO
SEM PTRIA E SEM PATRO
A CAPOEIRA UMA LUTA
QUE SURGIU DA OPRESSO

A CAPOEIRA CULTURA
QUE SURGIU DA ESCRAVIDO
A CAPOEIRA POESIA
QUE NASCE DO CORAO

VIVA MUTAES
I VIVA MUTAES CAMAR
 VOLTA DO MUNDO
I VOLTA DO MUNDO CAMAR

World Citizen

My little brother in capoeira
Listen carefully
The planet we live on
All of it is a single nation

In Africa or in Brazil
In Russia or Japan
In this, Gods, world
What has value is union.

Capoeira is a game
For children, men and women
The only ones who dont play capoeira
Are those who dont know how or dont want to

Im living in this world
Without homeland or boss
Capoeira is a fight
Which came out of oppression

Capoeira is a culture
That came out of slavery
Capoeira is poetry
That is born from the heart

Long live Mutaes
I Long live Mutaes, my friend.
I around the world
I around the world, my friend

IDADE DE BRINCAR

I
BATAM PALMAS
VAMOS CANTAR
O BERIMBAU EST TOCANDO
A RODA VAI COMEAR

QUANDO ERA BEM PEQUENO
NA IDADE DE BRINCAR
ME LEVARAM PARA ESCOLA
FUI FORADO A ESTUDAR

DEPOIS EU FUI CRESCENDO
A ESCOLA ABANDONEI
PARA ESTUDAR A VIDA
NO TENHO QUE FALAR INGLS

NO IMPORTA SER DOUTOR
VARREDOR OU JARDINEIRO
O QUE IMPORTA NESSA VIDA
 SER DONO DE SI MESMO

EU NO GOSTO DA FALSA ESCOLA
MAS EU GOSTO DO ESTUDO
ESTUDANDO A GENTE APRENDE
MUITA COISA NESTE MUNDO

 HORA HORA
I
 HORA HORA CAMAR

Age for Playing

I
Clap your hands
Were going to sing
The berimbau is playing
The roda is about to start

When I was very small
At the age for playing
They took me to school
I was forced to study

Then as I grew up
I abandoned school
In order to study life
I dont have to speak English

It doesnt matter whether youre doctor
A street-sweeper or a gardener
What matters in this life
Is to be master of yourself

I dont like the false school
But I like to study
Studying, we learn
A lot of things in this world

Its time, its time
I
Its time, its time my friend

O SOL NASCE PARA TODOS

I
 MEU IRMO
VALENTE NO EXISTE NO...

VOC NO RECONHECE A AMIZADE
DE UM IRMO
PORQUE TANTA VIOLNCIA
TANTO DIO NO CORAO.

VOC QUE MUITO VALENTE
MAS TEM MEDO NO CORAO
O INIMIGO DO VALENTE
 ELE MESMO QUE BOBO.

SE VOC NO ENTENDEU
OUA BEM COM ATENO,
 CHEGADO O MOMENTO
DA CAPOEIRA DAR AS MOS,
PR LUTAR CONTRA A MISRIA,
FOME E OPRESSO
I, VIVA MEU DEUS
I, VIVA MEU DEUS CAMAR

The Sun Rises for Everyone

I
 my brother
Theres no such thing as a brave person...

You dont recognize the friendship
Of a brother
Why so much violence
S much hate in the heart?

You who are very brave
But have fear in your heart
The enemy of the braze man
Is he himself who is a big dummy

If you dont understand this
Listen carefully
The moment has comeBR> For capoeiristas to link hands
To fight against misery,
Hunger and oppression
I, long live my god
I, long live my god, my friend

MERA FICO

I
SENHORES DO EXECUTIVO,
DO LEGISLATIVO E JUDICIRIO
EU T CANSADO DE ILUSO...
EU SOU FILHO DE OPERRIO
NESSE VELHO MUNDO CO.
NA HORA DOS GRANDES BANQUETES
OS PODEROSOS COMEM O TRIGO
O JOIO DISTRIBUIDO
PARA ESSE POVO ADORMECIDO.
VAMOS REPARTIR O TRIGO
E ACORDAR ESSE GIGANTE.
LIBERDADE CONQUISTADA
NO SE PEDE A GOVERNANTE.

Mere Fiction

I
Ladies and Gentlemen of the Executive
The Legislative and the Judiciary
Im tired of illusions...
Im the child of a worker
In this old dog of a world
When its time for the big feasts
The powerful eat the wheat
The chaff is distributed
To the sleeping masses
Lets divide up the wheat
And wake up this giant
Freedom must be won
Not begged from the ruler
