Capoeira Workshop in Grenada, West Indies
March/April and October/November 2005

description by alisa clements, then-resident of Grenada:

there was already a group of medical students on the island, a group of young people from many different countries who had formed a capoeira group and were training two or three times a week. there was no 'master' or affiliation with any particular group, but the leadership abilities and enthusiasm of a few who had already studied capoeira communicated themselves to the rest to surprising and praiseworthy effect. their training was pretty rigorous - a good dose of sweat and good humor in each session. those who had belonged from the start could master most of the essential movements. congratulations to these youth for their initiative and perseverence!
tico's arrival was much appreciated by all, the more experienced as well as the beginners. in addition to providing the example of the Casa de Capoeira Mutaes' exhaustive and distinctive training, he emphasized the musical training which had been somewhat lacking beforehand - the students did practice to the accompaniment of capoeira CDs, one young woman played the berimbau and another participant the pandeiro, but they did not have access to the remainder of the bateria instruments or much experience as a whole in participating in the music-making, singing, etc. this experience allowed them to familiarize themselves a bit more with this vital aspect of capoeira.
all were very grateful, invited tico to group dinners, gave him cards and presents expressing their thanks for the lessons (not only physical) they had received from him.

description by tico camaleo:

in this situation for the first time i had the experience of teaching without recourse to spoken language... i found out that it is possible to teach/learn quickly. in truth, the major difference is that of language, because enthusiastic people accomplish things joyfully in any part of the world. there is the fact that someone who grows up seeing capoeira can understand the teaching more readily... for soneone whos never seen it before, i think it must be quite confusing...its a lot of information at once, people start to learn without knowing how all the elements fit together. -tc
