Integrated Science and Writing
This lesson is just a small part of our ROCK UNIT. It is an opportunity for students to express themselves in writing when describing rocks. We would have a word wall for rock related words posted. This lesson would be used early in the year. I would save their writing and have them write additional adjectives for it -- to make their paragraph even more interesting --at another session later in the year.
The illustration below would look like their first draft should. They would then get a new sheet of paper with space for an illustration at the top and lines on the bottom for their paragraph. Their final drafts (illustration and paragraph) would be bound into a class book for all to read during self-selected reading.
I could take photos of them holding their rocks with my digital camera to save for identifying the rock of each student for our future project later in the year in case they need to look at it again when adding adjectives.
Below, you will find examples of a teacher rubric and also one for students to use while doing their project. I like for students to have individual rubrics when possible but if not I try to post one in the room for them to check against their project.
