At Long Last!

Climax wins first Patzer Bowl, beat Yukon 127-91

It took ten years, but for Paul Zych and the Climax 69ers, this win made the wait all worthwhile. In their third title game appearance, the 69ers finally came away with the championship, earning a 127-91 victory over a scrappy Yukon Icebreakers team. It was a great team effort as eight out of ten positions scored in double digits, led by Chad Johnson and Chris Chambers who scored 17 points apiece.

"I finally did it!" exclaimed a happy and relieved Coach Zych. "Now when do I get the Bowl?"

It was a sort of redemption for Zych, who beat both Grand Rapids and Yukon in their playoff run, teams that had victimized him in Patzer Bowls IV and VIII respectively.

"Give him credit, he got hot at the right time," said Yukon coach Travis Lampman, who, much like other Patzer Bowl appearances, had to scrap together a team for a variety of reasons. "I was hurt with some injuries to (Domanick) Davis and Marvin (Harrison) sat out with the Colts already having clinched their playoff spot." For the big game, he reactivated Artose Pinner and signed Jay Feely and inserted Aaron Moorehead to replace Harrison. None of hwom can be considered fantasy stars. "I've won Patzer Bowls with less, but it didn't happen this time."

"Congratulations on his Patzer Bowl, but he still can't say anything because I've got three," chided Lampman.

"He started in the league in year two and it took awhile, but he earned this one," said Greased Lightning coach Nick Klein. "After he started slow, I told him not to give up and he certainly didn't. This is one of the great runs in league history. He took on all comers and beat all of the top teams along the way."

SEMI-FINAL SCORES

Yukon Icebreakers 110 Standale Big Knox 75
It was not a good time to hit a cold streak. Standale scored only 75 points and bowed to the Yukon Icebreakers by 35 in a PFL Semi-final contest. Carson Palmer put up a solid 25 points but got little support from anyone else. Rudi Johnson (24 points) and Jonathan Wells (21 points) led the way for Yukon (10-4)who will appear in their fifth Patzer Bowl in the last six seasons. Standale concludes the season with a 10-5 record.

Climax 69ers 156 Grand Rapids 129
In one of the highest scording playoff games in league history, the high flying Greased Lightning were zapped by a season-high 156 points from Climax. Chris Cooley put the nail in the coffin with a 25 point performance, the leading scorer of eight double-digit players for Paul. Shaun Alexander (23 points) and Mike Anderson (21 points) led the attack for Grand Rapids (10-4). It will be Climax' third Payer Bowl appearance in franchise history.

WILD CARD SCORES

Climax 69ers 128 Ironwood Cox 104
A great run came to an end as the expansion Ironwood Cox bowed to the Climax 69ers in a wild-card game. Tom Brady scored a game-high 31 points to lead the Ironwood effort, but it was not enough to overcome the attack of Drew Brees (28), Chris Chambers (24) and Samkon Gado (23). Ironwood finishes the year 8-6 while Climax will get another shot at Grand Rapids, renewing a heated playoff rivalry.

Standale Big Knox 84 Eugene Levies 46
In what can be considered a poor performance for Standale, his 84 points was more than enough to defeat a wounded and weary Eugene Levies squad. No one reached double-digits for the Levies (6-8), but were led by David Carr and the Atlanta defense who each scored nine. The Big Knox (10-4) were paced by Antonio Gates' 18 point performance. Jeff will advance to play Yukon in the semi-finals.

Playoff Preview

Here's a look at the playoff teams starting with the favorites:

(#3 seed) Standale Big Knox -- Two words strike fear in any team that has to face Jeff in the playoffs: LaDanian Tomlinson. Capable of dropping 150 points in any given week, Jeff has a great supporting cast to LDT, namely Carson Palmer, Hines Ward, Anotnio Gates and Willie Parker. Standale did lose two of their final four games, but the first loss was when Cincinnati, San Diego and Pittsburgh were on the bye in week 10 and the other was a game Jeff would have won if not for a lineup snafu. With all three of his key teams in heated playoff races, expect all of Jeff's top players to play full time and that alone makes Standale the odds-on favorite to take home Patzer Bowl XI.

(#4) Climax 69ers -- Talk about peaking at the right time. After starting 1-5, Climax has reeled off six straight wins (including wins over Grand Rapids, Yukon, Ironwood and a decimated Standale team). Paul's squad has really hit its' stride, scoring over 96 points every week since week 5. Led by Steve Smith, Clinton Portis and Chad Johnson, the only thing lacking is a consistent running game. If that sorts out, this team could win their first championship.

(#2) Yukon Icebreakers -- Probably would have been moved up a slot had Brien Westbrook not gotten hurt. Scored 161 points in a week 12 win over Eugene and always comes to play this time of year. Comes in with a better team on paper than last year's runner-up squad. Has had more "off games" than any the other top contenders this year, but cannot be counted out, especially with Michael Vick, Rudi Johnson, Domenick Davis and Marvin Harrison in the lineup. Tony Gonzalez, a disappointment so far this year, could be the difference in the postseason.

(#1) Grand Rapids Greased Lightning -- May prove to be a victim of its own success. Their top two players, Shaun Alexander and Edgerrin James may see their playing time shrink down the stretch, especially in the important week 15 and 16 games because of their teams' playoff position. The overachieving supporting cast of the Jakes (Plummer and Delhomme) and Willis McGahee, Reggie Wayne, Anquan Boldin and Santana Moss will need to step up for the champs to defend.

(#5) Ironwood Cox -- The tradition of expansion teams making the playoffs continues thanks to Mike. A pleasant surprise this season, the Cox have been easily the most consistent team all year. Save for a 70-point performance in week 13, Ironwood strung together 10 solid weeks and will be a very tough out in the tournament. Ranked this low only because of the individual firepower of the top four teams, Ironwood's team has been just that, a team, all season long. The players to look for are Lamont Jordan, Tom Brady and Torry Holt. A healthy Corey Dillon would make a huge difference.

(#6) Eugene Levies -- The good news is that the Alaskan Assassins cannot eliminate the Levies from the playoffs this year. Ironically, it is those Assassins that give Eugene -- the lone team with a losing record to make this year's playoffs -- hope. The 2000 Assassins team are the only team with a losing regular season record to win a Patzer Bowl. Duane's team started 6-1 but was decimated by injuries. While clearly the longest shot, it does only take three wins to take the Bowl. However, the injuries and benchings have left Steven Jackson and Ashley Lelie, Lee Evans and the Atlanta defense as their top players.

For the third consecutive season, the PFL is participating in the National Fantasy Football ranking system. To follow along with the National Playoff chase, click the link below.

What is the PFL? The PFL is the Patzer Football League, organized in 1995, is a fantasy football league where you select NFL players to a 'fantasy team.' You take the stats of those players and compare them to those of other fantasy owners. The owner with the most points gets a win for the week.
PFL History... The PFL was created in 1995 by the eight original owners. Those owners were Nick Klein, John Smits, Laura Smits, Brandon Fowler, Jason Heyman, Matt Kane, Jon Englesman and Jesse Buist. Nick Klein's Grand Rapids Greased Lightning won the inaugural 'Patzer Bowl' 38-17 over Laura Smits' Jackpot Jokers, then known as the Predators. The 1996 season championship was also won by the Greased Lightning, this year over Doug Klein's Casnovia Lugnuts, 31-21. The 1997 championship game went to John Smits' Wahoo Indians who knocked off the Lightning 38-17.

Prior to the 1998 season, the PFL underwent some drastic changes. This included revamping the scoring system to a more traditional system and adding a fresh group of owners. The Greased Lightning returned to the winner's circle in 1998 with a 87-75 win over Paul Zych. Prior to 1999, we redrafted to accommodate new owners. The 1999 Title went to Travis Lampman's Yukon Icebreakers, 90-77 victors over the GRGL. In 2000, Yukon defended its' crown, again knocking off Grand Rapids 139-93. GR was again on the short end in 2001, losing to Dave Silman's Alaskan Assassins 112-109. 2002 saw Yukon return to the winner's circle with a win over Climax. 2003 had Grand Rapids finally get the trophy back with a 133-102 win over the expansion Muskegon Mudhens. The Lightning repeated in 2004, taking Patzer Bowl X over Yukon
