Records fall as Standale beats G.R., Ironwood holds off Climax
It took only three weeks for the PFL to cannibalize each other and put the league in danger of not having a league member participate in the league playoffs for the second time in five years. Both Alaska and Grand Rapids went in different directions scoring-wise (Alaska scored 75 points less and Grand Rapids scored 61 points more), but both ended up with the same reult...a "1" in the loss column.
It also took awhile, but some of the big name players have finally begun to show their worth in the fantasy ranks. In fact, a full dozen players topped the 20 point mark this week and three topped 35. Strangely enough, two of those three ended up on losing teams this week. Steve Smith scored 35, but two costly bye week starts from Paul hurt the Climax 69ers as they fell 118-112 to the Ironwood Cox. It was another strong team effort for Mike's squad as only one players scored less than 7 points. The 69ers, down 118-98 going into Monday night, had a valiant effort from Rod Smith, scoring 14, but was injured and did not finish the game. The 69ers remain the leagues only winless team while
Around the League
Standale Big Knox 172 Grand Rapids Greased Lightning 141
It isn't often that 141 points has not won a PFL game...it has only happened twice, but never during the regular season. Grand Rapids, who had scored a combined 170 in two wins to start the season got payback in a 172-141 loss to Standale, setting the record for most combined points in a regular season PFL game. The 172 points is the third highest total in league history. LaDanian Tomlinson scored a season-high 44 points while Brandon Lloyd and Hines Ward added 26 and 23 for the victorious Big Knox. Shaun Alexander scored 38 for the Greased Lightning.
Eugene Levies 88 Yukon Icebreakers 63
Eugene shook off one injury last week and had to endure another to Steven Jackson, but came away with a big early-season divisional win over Yukon. Kerry Collins led the way with 25 points for Duane's squad while Michael Vick put up 22 for the Icebreakers.
Whooping Llamas 98 Alaskan Assassins 55
Tradition and the law of averages dictate that a big scoring week is followed by a low-scoring week and that was true for Alaska as they fell to the Llamas by 43. After getting away with zero points from the running back position last week, Dave only got four points this week. The Llamas were led by Julius Jones' 22 points and as a result, earned their first win of the year and handed Alaska their first loss.
Muskegon Mudhens 87 Crazy Jimmies 80
Peyton Manning and Priest Holmes have not started as strong as expected, but that hasn't kept Brian's Mudhens from starting out 2-1 and tied fo the Western Division lead. Fred Taylor led a balanced attack for Muskegon while Marc Bulger scored 25 in a losing effort for Jim.
