Sleepwalking to Victory
Lightning beat Icebreakers in low scoring thriller
The traditional Patzer Bowl week 1 grudge match looked eerily familiar, yet with a different result. The Grand Rapids Greased Lightning beat the Yukon Icebreakers 90-77 in the opening week of the 11th PFL season. The win ensures the traveling "Jim Zorn Spittoon" trophy will remain with Nick for another season.
For those who recall PFL history (and who among us doesn't)...(yes that was a joke), Patzer Bowl V featured a low scoring effort between the Yukon Icebreakers and Grand Rapids Greased Lightning. GRGL running backs did very little to help the team's cause in a 90-77 loss to Yukon. Alanis Morissette might like the irony that Yukon's running backs scored a combined six points this week in their 90-77 loss to Grand Rapids.
"For being two of the traditionally higest scoring teams in the league, Travis and I sure seem to have a lot of stinkers," commented Nick. "But as good as this rivalry is, anything can, and has happened, and that makes it that much better."
Which can be to blame for the two rivals jawing at each other as the game wound down. Yukon trailed by 43 going into Monday night, but with explosive Michael Vick and Terrell Owens playing, the game was truly not settled until the final whistle.
Around the League
Muskegon Mudhens 121 Climax 69ers 111
Paul's squad was led by 24 points from the New York Giants defense, thanks to two returns for touchdowns, but it was not enough to counter Jimmy Smith's 25 and Peyton Manning's 20 as another pair of friends/rivals faced off in week one.
Alaskan Assassins 112 Standale Big Knox 69
Jeff's team struggled out of the gate, getting only 10 combined points from his receivers and just one touchdown out of his entire team. Dave was led by his receivers, as usual, but also got 24 points from Chiefs backup Larry Johnson, forced into the starting lineup due to an injury to Lee Suggs.
Crazy Jimmies 102 Eugene Levies 90
Jim forced the issue against one of the pre-season favorites led by Marc Bulger's league-high 26 points. Duane's squad was hit by the injury bug again, losing WR Javon Walker to a knee injury.
Ironwood Cox 109 Whooping Llamas 80
In another matchup of friendly rivals, Mike beat Jeremy in the PFL return for both players after three and four year hiatuses. Corey Dillon led an all-around team effort for Ironwood, who had seven players in double-figures.
