| My admiration for Celine Dion dates back to freshman high school, when I first heard her sing "Beauty and the Beast (with Peabo Bryson). As usual, the movie influenced my opinion regarding her singing. I just thought her voice beautiful, the song beautiful, the movie beautiful. Before I knew it, I heard her version of "If You Asked Me to" playing on a local radio station, and I found myself buying a cassette audio of her second English album, Celine Dion (her first was the non-descript album, "Unison"). From that album, I discovered that she's a pro as far as singing love songs are concerned, which suited my sappy sensibilities. Of course, I was disappointed that during the early 1990s, either nobody has heard of Celine Dion or else she's considered as just a one-song wonder, with her fame in Beauty and the Beast.
When Celine Dion was elevated to star status after her performance in the Atlanta Olympics (she sang "The Power of the Dream"), friends would start talking about Celine Dion with me. I was considered an authority on her during my college years, up to the time when her song "Because You Loved Me" started to touch people's hearts and "It's All Coming Back To Me" competed with Toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart" in the airwaves (ah, those were the days). That was when Celine Dion attained the title of diva, and while I still admire Celine Dion, the interest has started to wane. I realized that once many people share your admiration, the object of said admiration tends to be commonplace. Too, I noticed how Celine Dion started to display vocal techniques that can be called her own. And while that in itself showcases her originality, I find myself yearning for the old Celine Dion, where her rendition of songs bordered on innocence and raw emotion. Now, with all the marketing hype and attention, some of her newer songs come across as glossed over. Nonetheless, I still like Celine Dion, and I would listen to some of her older songs which I personally think relay pure emotion. The songs also tell a love story of their own, which is why I like them in the first place. |
