| A classmate in freshman high school introduced me to Star Trek Next Generation. That time, I was more of a Star Wars fan, having held the torch for Luke Skywalker (no, for some reason, Han Solo's character was too rough for my taste. Those were the teenage years for me). Then again the invitation was a form of peer pressure and so at that classmate's invitation, I watched a Next Gen episode later that night. I was glad I did. | |||||||||||||||||||
| Next Generation gave way to my interest in the classic Captain James T. Kirk movies. I did not have the chance to watch the classic original television series, the local television network didn't offer those. Rather, I watched the Star Trek movie specials, and the torch got transferred back and forth between Lt. Cmdr. Data, Capt.Kirk, Capt. Picard and Cmdr. Riker (I always like the intellectual types). When the local television network stopped showing the weekly Next Gen episodes, I think I suffered a mild form of depression. It was one of those shows that I looked forward to every week and I didn't even get to watch the final episode. Shortly after the disappearance of Next Gen, the same television network started showing Deep Space Nine. To my disappointment, it wasn't up to par with Next Gen. Maybe because the intellectually appealing guys are few and far between. Or maybe because I got turned off by Quark the Ferengi. Apparently I wasn't the only one who had that opinion; Deep Space Nine didn't last long in the network. Fast forward to my post grad years. I met a colleague with whom I got along so well, it was a pleasant surprise to discover him a Trekker (that came from him. I always called myself a Trekkie until then). He then introduced me to Star Trek Voyager, lent me a couple of tapes, paperbacks and magazines, and my on again, off again relationship with Star Trek was, well, on again. Until my friend ran out of tapes and books to lend me and I momentarily forgot that I was a Trekker. Again. To make the long story short, my liking for Star Trek comes in pulsed doses. When an opportunity arises for me to watch a Star Trek movie or television episode or special or whatnot, I remember that I am a fan. Right now, I remember that I am, because I have finally managed to get my hands on the complete seven-season episodes of Next Generation. I'm about to get my hands on Voyager soon, after I finish my Next Gen marathon. This section covers the Star Trek shows that I have watched, along with a couple or so Star Trek books that I have read. Of course, this section will be stalled for a while, as I have yet to finish watching the Next Gen eps---am about to finish season one. Six more seasons to go! |
