John
Diamond rips at X-Sight Pro at Forster, NSW,
October
20th – 21st.
|
John Diamond has been ripping
the bag once again in the Aussie comps and has convinvlingly made his way
through his first two heats of the comp and now faces Ryan Hardy, Simon
Thorton and John Cruikshank. Hopefully he can cause another major upset
like he did when he knocked out Steve MacKenzie in the Yorkes comp and
make it into the quarter finals.
I will let you know about
the final rsults when they come to hand but it looks like John will make
the top 32 of the Aussie circuit and will be seeded in the tour for next
year.

RYAN HARDY WINS BODYBOARD PRO ON HOME TURF
AVALON’S
BEN PLAYER WINS OVERALL SERIES
|
Margaret River’s Ryan Hardy
has once again proved his world-class ability by defeating an elite field
of Australasia’s top bodyboarders, to win the final of the Star/Manta Pro
in West Australia.
The 20-year-old excelled
in the 1 to 1.5 metre, barrelling waves of North Point, Gracetown, scoring
a near perfect nine point ride with a 5 second tube-ride to post his first
win at home. Hardy, easily outpointed Kiami’s Graham Miller who scored
the only perfect 10 point ride of the final, with a 7 second barrel to
finish second.
Avalon’s Ben Player
accrued enough points with his third placing to claim the overall 2000
Australasian Bodyboard Tour despite one event still remaining. Player
posted the manoeuvre of the final with an epic ‘back-flip’ that saw him
jump from fourth to third and seal the overall series. Another highly
regarded big-wave specialist Steve ‘Bullet’ Mackenzie finished fourth posting
his best result of the year. All four power-based surfers advanced
through yesterday’s epic 8ft conditions at North Point, that saw a perfect
ten point ride posted in every heat staged of the day.
Hardy who earlier this year
cut a swathe through the worlds best bodyboarders, when he won the Tahiti
Skins event in huge conditions, stated that this win was special to him.
“It just feels great to win my first event at home and to be able to compete
at North Point in a contest means a lot to me.”
Byron Bay’s Lauren Fletcher’s
victory over ratings leader Kira Llewellyn (Sunshine Coast) has placed
her in contention for this years overall title heading into the final contest
of the year. Fletcher, who clocked up her first victory of the year
is currently ranked at no.2 behind Llewellyn who placed second in the tournament.
Central Coasts Lilly Pollard finished third in from of Melissa Laws.
John Diamond won his first
heat but failed to progress any further.
The final event on this year’s
Australasian Bodyboard Tour will be the X-Sight Pro at Forster, NSW, October
20th – 21st.

Where: The comp was mobile
nand thus ended up at Tora, east of Martinborough on the exposed Wairarapa
coast.
The first few rounds were
run at mushy Tora point, but a wind change had the comp moved to heavy/
hollow 2-3ft lefts and rights at Tora Shorey.
Under 18's
The under 18's were always going
to be a hotly contested divison. The contestants in the final included
Wanganui locals Jon Tunnel and Richard McKenna, Titahi Bay ripper Duncan
Smith, and underground rider Hayley Patuwai from Porirua.
The final saw Duncan Smith
dominate with clean spins and heavy rolls of the closeout sections.
Richard McKenna, Jon Tunnel
and Haylee Patuwai struggled to find the waves they had in earlier heats.
Resulting in Duncan being the clear eventual winner.

Opens
The opens contained heaps of
talentincluding current national open mens champ Dwayne Parata, four times
national finalist/NZ team member Gavin Murdoch, Pipe finalist Ben McKinnon,
new school ripper Camron Hurst, ex national U18 champ Danial Ruri, national
dropknee champ Sam Peters and the list goes on and on...
Although many of the competitors
had come to surf the legendary breaker bay they had to settle on the punchy
rights and lefts of Tora Shorebreak. From the start almosat anyone enterd
could have taken this one out.
Dwayne Parata and Gavin Murdoch
wewre stylish and consistent throughout the comp, Cam and Ben went head
to head trying to go big on almost every wave, and everyone else went as
hard as they could in the often shifty peaks. The semis could have been
finals at any NZ comp. Unlucky to be knocked out at this stage on countbacks
were Cam and Sam who surfed well but unfortunatly didn't get the really
high scoring waves.
The final was pretty much
a whos who of NZ bodyboarding containing Dwayne,Dave Campbell (in his return
to competition)Ben McKinnon and dark horse Dan Charles. Dave and Dan held
the lead for most of the final until
wave magnet Dwayne (who
couldnt seem to get away from the best waves all day) scoreda nice barrel
that he milked the whole way to shore and Ben moved to the right where
everyone else was surfing.
The final results were super
close with only afdew points seperating the top 4.

Island Comp Details-
Sanction
fee and entry form
|
The event is scheduled for November
17-26 which is 2 weeks after Brazil. If you go to Brazil. It is a
much shorter flight. We need this event.
They just paid their sanction
fee and sent an entry form. The wave maps show good waves for there even
in this side season. St. Pierrre Works better this time of year because
of winds. This is a good opprotunity for the other RSA riders
to get some points going into Pipe. It will be a $20,000 men, $10,
000 women and $5,000 DK.
Over the past three weeks
or so Raglan has been hit by a number of solid and consistent swells and
favourable winds getting up to 4-6ft at Indicators on a number of occassions
with one to two new swells every week. After a month of crap swells and
bad winds the area has been blessed with good clean swells, which are as
good as the last months waves were bad.
Bodyboarders who have been
on it are the usual crew consisting of Dale Sattler, Glen Mossong, Luke
McPake, Paul Meyer, Hemi Holden and myself. During one surf at Manu Bay
Dale, Glen, Luke and myself were visited by a 6ft shark who came into the
area to give birth to a baby shark. Dale, Luke and Glen quickly went in
as soon as they spotted the shark while I continued to surf for another
hour or so without any knowledge of the shark but was promptly told about
it when I came in, thanks guys.

The
"Box" Margaret River Western Australia
|
7th - 13th October 2000
John Diamond and (I think)
Sam Wells are entering the Box comp and are there trying to finish
the Aust circuit in the top 32 both are close to the top 32. This would
seen them into the 2nd or third round for the 2001 GOB Australasia circuit
Australia's best bodyboarders
will converge on Margaret River, W.A.,
this Saturday for the sixth
event on the Australasian Bodyboard Tour the
Star/Manta Pro, which has
a 7 day waiting period for the best possible
waves.
Western Australia's Joe Jordonoff
(Yallingup) and Ryan Hardy (Margaret
River) will be entering
as favourites at their home break of the
infamous bodyboard wave
of 'The Box'. Recent Tahiti Skins winner Hardy, is
within striking distance
of claiming the ratings lead with a top result after
only competing in three
of the six events so far staged on this years
domestic tour due to his
international commitments. A riders best four results
from seven events are tallied
for their end of year rankings
Former national junior champion,
Jordonoff, is W.A..'s most consistent
performer and is currently
ranked at no.7 on the ratings. Jordonoff's
experience at 'The Box'
should also see him jump on the rankings.
Current ratings leader Ben
Player (Avalon), secured the no.1 position
from Andrew Lester (Cronulla)
with a win at the recent Morey Pro in South
Australia. The Avalon
competitor will have a tough time holding out
the tours most consistent
performer, Lester, who is currently placed 140
points behind Player stating,
"Its harder to win an event in Australia than
the World Tour, Andrew is
one of the best in the world and he will be going
all out this week."
The dark horse of the field
is Bondi's Beau Day, who has had an amazing
return to form after a crippling
back injury which kept him out of
competition for the past
two seasons. Currently ranked at no.3 i his
first injury free year,
Day is determined to seal this year's crown.
"I could not walk away from
the sport without knowing I had given it my
best shot, it's my time
and I want to win the tour," said an exited Day.
The third event of the Women's
Tour will be staged in conjunction with
the men's event. Ratings
leader Kira Llewellyn (Maroochydore) expected to
continue her domination
of this years tour but will face tough competition
from Lilly Pollard (Central
Coast and Western Australia's Teagan Buttertly
(Triggs).
Other Riders expected to
do well are Sean Virtue (Yallingup), Ben
Sukenik (Gracetown), Brad
Hughes, (Trigg). Chad Jackson (Margaret River)

WELLINGTON COLD
WATER CLASSIC COMP
By Jamie Waugh, Contest
Director
A number of New Zealand top
body board riders have submitted entries for the Wellington Region’s biggest
body boarding event to date, the Morey/Vescovato Cold Water Classic body
board contest to be run on the weekend of October 14-15.
Registrations have already
been received from Wanganui’s Ben McKinnon, who was placed 16th
in Hawaii’s famous Pipeline event, Titahi Bay’s Dwayne Parata, the
current New Zealand national body board champion and Wellington’s Sam
Peters, current New Zealand national drop knee champion.
“The contest is shaping up
to be the biggest and best bodyboard contest ever held in the Wellington
Region,” contest director Jamie Waugh said today.
“Given reasonable waves the
Cold Water Classic, which is offering some excellent prizes, courtesy of
Morey, Vescovato and Boardriders, will give local boarders a chance to
compete against and learn from nationally ranked competitors,” Jamie said,
noting that body boarding was one of New Zealand’s fastest-growing sports.
“Being presented by Boardriders,
of Willis Street, Wellington, it has been rated for points by the New Zealand
Body Boarding Association as a 2A New Zealand Tour event,” Jamie said.
The contest will be run as
a mobile event with contest organisers choosing the beach with best waves
on the day in an arc from Castlepoint in the east to Titahi Bay in the
west. Competitors and spectators will meet at the Petone Bowl, Petone,
each contest day at 7 am before travelling to the chosen venue.
Entry forms are available
from Boardriders, 74 Willis Street, Wellington.

BY HAYDEN PARSONS
The month began with another
consistant NE swell. Blackhead was between 2-4ft and offshore for two weeks
straight with a nice lefthander off the point.
When the wind finally switched
the North Coast was pretty damm good with the pick spots being Aramoana
and Karitane Bar.
Even Dunnos Reef had a few
good days. St Kilda was quite fun for a few days with nice little peaks
all over the place. Mitchell Frew was again ripping it up big time.
(Watch out top NZ boogers).
I scored Bird Island absolutly
cranking and looking a bit like Indo with long, super hollow lefts.
Near the end of the month
a huge south swell hit and Allan's Beach was the pick spot with waves up
to 8ft and the guys from the Big Wave Challenge were out there tearing.
Ironically the huge swell dropped down to 1ft the next day and stayed that
way for the last few days of the month.
Basically the surf in the
Raglan region over the last 2 weeks has totally sucked with a number of
large out of control swells with gay Northwesterly winds.
Every now and again their
has been a few average (ie rideable) days in between the crap but nothing
great.
This period of crap waves
has taken its toll on local bodyboarders such as Dale Sattler, Luke
McPeak, Simon thompson and myself who have all rapidly become alcoholics
and in desperate need of attending some AA meetings. At the moment the
west coast is being hit by another solid swell with windy conditions but
it may get good as the swells drops depending on the direction of the wind.
