NZ SURFING AWARDS
At the New Zealand Surfing Awards Northland's John Diamond was awarded the title of 2000 bodyboarder of the yer for his success overseas in the Aussie GOB and winning the New Zealand tour for the under 18's division. Other nominees included Sam Wells, Aaron Lock and John Blackwoood.
John Diamond is now living in Auckland with Kevin McAlister and is working for Broady at the Morey factory.

Port Waikato X Factor Comp Results
The X Factor contest was held at Port Waikato on Sunday the third of December in  contestable three foot swell with lightish onshores. The final event of the BBNz tour attracted a small number of bodyboarders from as far away as Hamilton and as close as Port Waikato.
Despite the limited numbers the event was stacked with some of NZ's top riders including John Diamond, Cameron Hirst, Ben MacKinnon and Hemi Holden.
At the end of the day Cameron Hirst narrowly took out the Open by less than a point over Ben MacKinnon while Hemi Holden took out the U18's and some kook caused a major upset in the Dropknee division to take out the win a head of John Diamond and Hemi Holden .
We would like to thank the sponsors Ski Trading Post, MoreyMez, Rip Curl, Bodyline wetsuits, Wet Dreams and sticky bumps wax for supporting the comp dspite the fact that a number of the prizes went mysteriously missing and were not handed out, were they taxed by a 4ft Christmas elf known as Grimp who has a degree and is going to Japan?

Maori Surfing Nationals -Bodyboard Results.
By Gary Numbs.
Results
            1st Reuban Quirk (GIS)
            2nd  Ahipene Newby (GIS)
             3rd Tom  Kitson  (Can)
            4th ??????????????????

The final was surfed in clean 1.5m metre waves.  Tom kitson got off to a good start by popping nice air in the shorey. Reuban's first wave was more impressive : popping a sick back flip. Ahipene surfed consistently through the final with spin to roll combo's. Kitson and Newby both took advantage of the punchy shorey: not a good idea as Quirkewas scoring all the set waves.
The best move was a close call between Kitson's ARS and Quirks backflip....in my opinion the backflip was the best.. As a spectator the comp was run very well.Newby is someone to watch as he is only 14years old...

2000 Morey Bodyboarding Championships
Written by: Kevin McAlister Ph: 021 131 5898

The Morey 2000 Bodyboarding Championships was held on Saturday the 18th of November at South Piha in 2 metre onshore conditions.

Over 40 competitors from as far a field as Christchurch were on hand for the event, which boasted a prize pool of over $7000 from Morey and Rip Curl.

Morey professional rider Damian King and Michael Crawley of Australia were on hand for the event, both being eliminated in the semi finals of the Open Mens competition.  They were impressed by the quality of the New Zealand competitors and King summed it up well in a speech following the finals, “Although there aren’t that many bodyboarders in New Zealand there are some good riders and there is a really mellow vibe amongst everyone”

Eventual Open Mens winner John Diamond of Whangerei has continued a run of great performances after finishing in the top 32 on the Australasian GOB tour.  Cameron Hirst of Auckland finished in second place ahead of Ben Mckinnon of Wanganui and Aaron lock of Christchurch.

Diamond was the standout of the day surfing over 10 heats and winning the Open Mens and the Under 18 divisions respectively.

The Morey 2000 Bodyboarding championships was the penultimate event of the 2000 Bodyboard Surfing New Zealand championships with a 2A rated event at Port Waikato in early December.

Contest Director Kevin McAlister was happy with the turnout and impressed by the level of competition.  “It is really good to see the competitive level rising every contest and is great to see competitors travelling from as far a field as the South Island and Australia.”
