Germany

Cologne was a very awesome place to visit mainly because of the Köln Cathedral. The city is based on the Rhine, Germany's longest river.

Cologne Cathedral

The Cologne Cathedral was probably the most exhilarating sight that I saw in Germany. It surpassed the experience of my first flight in an airliner, it surpassed the scenery by far. On the first day in Cologne, we took a subway train to the cathedral. We took an escalator out or the subway and were in a massive train station. As I turned around, I was blown away! The ancient building filled my entire view and I could not stop marveling at its supremeness. It stands over 400 metres tall and is larger than several football fields put together. As we rounded the building and came to the entrance, I looked up at the two massive towers that stood over the doors. They went so high! Clouds passed through them as if we were on an airship. It truly was amazing.

This picture was taken from the top of one of the towers on the Cologne Cathedral. A 529 stair climb brought us to this point overlooking the city. The staircase was long and winding. Lots of words were all over the walls and at one point was a stair labeled "Half Way." I totally thought it was a joke, but it turned out to be true. It is one monstrous climb, but well worth it. As you can see in the background, there is a massive train bridge. The station to the left with all the glass windows is the one I looked upon the cathedral from. I can tell, they sure love their trains in Europe.

This picture shows once again, another view from the Cologne Cathedral of the Rhine River and the city surrounding its shores. A German friend of mine and I walked across the closest bridge one day looking for a good viewpoint in which to take a picture from because the cathedral was too big to capture up close. I tell you, this place is a must see. There is only one down side to visiting this city and its surrounding cities: it is the most polluted area of Germany. But don't let that change your mind.
