VISUAL SPOILER NOW AVAILABLE HERE!!

It had grown old before the first cities were formed. It has witnessed the rise and fall of empires. It is so vast, that no one had ever thought to name it something other than the Wilderness. With trees as wide as an Equinox Mammoth and peaking as tall as Twingates, the Wilderness has simply always been. And its magic is thick and choking in its power.

But it has slowly almost imperceptibly been outstripped by the growing power of those communities that always feared and obeyed it. From the islanders who have appeared in Rom bay, weird anomalies emerge. From the fury queen of the dark corners, a command of consumption is felt. From the podiums of university halls, lessons in artifice seek to erode the power the Wilderness has sequestered. And from Twingates itself pour out a veritable legion of unworldly foes, baying for blood and battle. Forces are amassing from every direction, perchance to destroy each other, but certainly aiming to destroy it. Can the Wilderness survive? Because here comes the conquest!

Welcome to the Conquest page. In anticipation of this homebrewed 143 card set, features will be added to the site on a regular basis. There will be articles that unpack each color and/or theme in the set and these articles will present by far the largest amount of preview material with each update. But in addition to these articles, I will also have other bits and pieces collected in other sections of the page. Discuss in the Conquest thread!

The Folks

The parents of this set are a previously released homebrew called Wastelands and a job application I submitted to Wizards of the Coast that went by the name The Great Designer Search.

Wastelands was created May 2006 by my good friend Wamyc. We’ve been playing paper Magic together since about ’94 and his surprise creation of a homebrewed set was just great fun. There was a lot of care put into Wamyc’s set. He constructed new art for each card, and had very clear design goals and set boundaries (see his Topped Off mechanic and his lack of Legendary creatures.) He allowed his audience who was viewing the preview to contribute things, like Orb of Insight suggestions (A trend I will continue.) And the whole thing culminated in an awesome Release Tournament that had actual packs of cards for sealed and draft games, and also had a prerelease card and prizes for the tourney winner. In addition to viewing his Setsite I also recommend you read his threads on the set Here  and There. And the spoiler is available here Too.

Playing mother to Wasteland’s father role was The Great Design Search, a contest for one of WotC’s Design Internships that I bombed out of in the second round. Even though I didn’t make the cut of the final 15, I continued to follow along with the challenges, reading the beginning of each new article and stopping to “submit” my own answer before reading the rest. As a result towards the end of 2006 I got into a really good design rhythm and on December 7th, a day that will live in infamy, (and also Wamyc’s birthday) the Great Designer Search challenge was to design an entire set. So I did. From that set, the seeds of Conquest were formed. The set has changed a little since that first attempt. It has been tightened up considerably, but the influences of that time are still evident to me.
