ATLANTIC CITY

As of now , only the Central Pier and the Tivoli Pier, a six-story amusement center built inside of the TropWorld hotel, offer boardwalk style amusements in Atlantic City. For those who like gambling or glitz or observing either of them(the painting of Hieronymus bosch may come to mind), Atlantic City is an exciting place. Other options include strolling on the boardwalk and watching the people or shopping. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards in the summer months, and you can visit the Absecon Lighthouse. The Atlantic city Art Center on the Garden Pier(Boardwalk and New Jersey Ave) has fine-art exhibits that change every month or two. Across the pier is the Atlantic City Historical Museum, which features photographs and memorabilia from the city's past. One photographic display changes to reflect topics of current interest,as,for example, Black History Month or the miss America Pageant.Annual events, in addition to the Miss America contest, include a dog show in December,an antique-cars show in february,an arts festival in April,a professional fine-arts show in June, and a crafts show in September.

JOCKEY HOLLOW

SoldierLifeexhibit,JockeyHollow Morristown is the story of an army struggling to survive. During two critical winters, the town sheltered the main encampment of the Continental Army. In 1777 George Washington overcame desertion and disease to rebuilt an army capable of taking the field against William Howe's veteran Redcoats. In 1779-80-the hardest winter in anyone's memory-the military struggle was almost lost amid starvation, nakedness, and mutiny on the bleak hills of jockey Hollow. Never was the leadership of Wasington more evident as he held together,at a desperate time, the small, ragged army that represented the country's main hope for independence. The Jockey Hollow visitor center is open daily,June through october, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. . Park buildings are closed on Thanksgiving Day,December 25,and January 1.

SIX FLAGS GREAT ADVENTURE

Great Adventure is a theme park without any discernable theme. It is more like a giant amusement park with drive through Safari tacked on. However, it is colorful and popular, although its huge acreage often tires young visitors. The new rides have less emphasis on teenage screaming and are geared more for family participation. "Roaring Rapids," for instance, is a rather mild ride down a man-made river. The idea is to get you wet rather than get you scared. For those who want to rest from the rides, there are a number of family shows. One of the best is "High Divers" a combination of skilled diving and buffoonery which alternates with the trained dolphin show at the Aqua stadium. You are not allowed to bring food inside the park except to the designated picnic area near the Safari section and of course, you should not eat too much if you are going on any of the fast rides. Its also good idea to bring along towels and some dry clothes for the long drive home. Those water rides can really drench you.
