California is in many ways as familiar as our own backyards. You see it on television, you see it in films, and magazines are always featuring the latest California trends.California's artist community is one of the largest in the world. The majority of California speak English, but California is the ultimate melting-pot of cultures, and each ethnic group has had its impact. There is a very strong Spanish influence , and the state did in fact start its life as a province of spanish Mexico. In agricultural areas it is sometimes impossible to find anyone who can understand English. Whether you are traveling by car, plane, ship, train, or bus, California is one of the most accessible states in the US. If you are travelling with children the best months are june, july, and August when Disneyland is at its busiest. If you are looking for a quieter time March, April, May, then late September, October, and November are more peaceful and avoid the period when most people take their holidays. |
San FranciscoSan Francisco is a relatively small city. First time visitors won't want to miss Golden Gate Park, the Palace of fine Arts, Chinatown, the Golden Gate Bridge, or a cable-car ride on Nob Hill. A walk down the Fillbert Steps or through Macondray Lane, or a peaceful hour gazing east from Ina Coolbrith Park, can be equally inspiring. |

San DiegoSan Diego is the ideal vacation destination. The climate is superb with warm, sunnt days that the Pacific breezes prevent from getting too hot. It rarely rains (a problem for residents but not for visitors), it never freezes, and the average annual daytime temperature range is between 58F AND 70F. It has 70 miles of sandy beaches and plenty of attractions, including what is considered to be the world's finest zoo and an enormous natural harbor, and is a cultural center of some significance There is history too. this is the birthplace of california. Father Junipero Serra established his first mission here in 1769 but over 200 years before that the Portugese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo landed in what is now San Diego Bay and claimed it for Spain. The "Old Town" has been made into a State Historic Park. Mexico is on the doorstep. Just travel 20 miles from downtown San Diego and you are in Tijuana across the border-but remember to take identification, and non-US citizens will need to produce a multipleentry visa.San Diego ZooThis is often considered to be the world's greatest Zoo, and for very good reasons. In a time when zoor are falling both out of favor and out business, San Diego Zoo is a remarkable success For one thing it is big, covering 128 acres There is a lot of space for the animals, and there are a lot of animals- 3,900 from 800 species An effort has been made to concentrate on endangered species and to develop breeding programs for these animals. |
CoronadoThe exclusive community of Coronado is almost an island. A long, narrow sand bar known as the Silver Strand connects it to the mainland. Until 1969 the only access was by ferry or a very long drive, but then the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge was built and now it only takes a few minutes to drive there from downtown San Diego. The main attraction is the Hotel del Coronado. This is one of the great hotels of the world, built of wood in 1888 and still in use as a luxury hotel. |
