EXTREMELY INTERESTING
In investigating the origin of styles we have been led to discover a fact which we were very far from expecting, which nothing could make us guess, and which renders the stydy of Dravidian an extremely interesting. That is that there has never been foreign influence.

ARCHITECTURE
'The houses of the poor classes were built of mud and thatched with grass or with the leaves of the coconut or palmyra palm, and their walls were painted with red earth. Most of the houses in the towns were built of brick and had tiled roofs; the walls were plastered with lime, and small windows shaped like the eye of the deer admitted light and air into the inner compartments....... Furniture of various descriiptions was in use....Sorne of the great fortresses, their walls, ramparts and towers were constructed with rough-hewn stone and mortar".

INDIGENOUS ORIGIN
Dravidian Architure is of indigenous origin and has advanced by a course of evolution;that the structural development is little if anything at all, while the development has all along been one of ornamentation.

ART OF SCULPTURE
"Among the industrial arts that found patronage in the Tamil Kingdoms and obtained distinct individually was the art of Sculpture, Though Sculpture seems to have flourished in India some centuries before Christ, it had been in the hands of a select few who under took works from king. During the tirhe ofour early Tamil saints, it was chiefly in the hands ofthe Samanas and Buddhists During the tenth century A.D, Scu[pture became less costly and different classes of sculptors arose who undertook works in various depart tneflts of their an for moderate charges. It was found field side by side with Architecture and the building of various temples was Un denaken by wealthy citizens or from subscriptions collected from the people. In architecture the Pandyan was different from the Chola. In the one we find the richness of beauty par-excellence and in the other, strength combined with moral tone..... There are some hints in Thevaram that Cholas encouraged ship-building.
