TOLKAPPIYAM
Finest Monument of Human Intelligence
The Tolkappiyam represents much more than just the most ancient Tamil grammar extend. It is not only one of the finest monu ments of human intelligence and intellect preserved in the Indian tradition; it is also the first literary expression of the indigenous, pre-Aryan Indian civilization it represents the essence and the summary of classical Tamil culture.

A GREAT MASTERPIECE OF POETRY
Apart from the fact that Silappatigaram is a great masterpiece of narrative and lyrical poetry,it contains the essence of old Tamil culture and, like other epics, it portrays whole civilization.

SILAPPATIGARAM~NATIONAL WORK
Silappatigaram is the first consciously national work of Tamil literature, the literary evidence of the fact that the Tamils had by that time attained nationhood.
DR. KAMIL ZVELEBIL
SILAPPATIGARAM
Silappatigaram (The Jewelled Angklet), written in faultless literary style it is near to the life of the people, it is by comparison realistic, dealing with the lives of two ordinary folk enmeshed in unhappy circumstances, and, unlike the Sanskrit courtly "epic". It sounds a note of true tragedy. The traditional author of the poem was Ilanogo Adigal.

SILAPPATIGARAM
Silappatigaram has a grim barogue force and splendour, unparalled elsewhere in Indian literature. It is imbued with both the ferocity of the early Tamils and their stern respect for justice, and incidentally, throws much light on the character of early Tamil kingship.

PURANANURU: CLASSICAL
The poet Maturai Tamilkkuttanar, has succeeded, using three simple adjectives and three simple nouns, to convey the picture of hare in terms of the animal's most typical features; it is simple an( perfect, in one word, classical.

FORMAL, STEREOTYPED STYLE
Paripadal, is more formal stereotypoed style for it includes both religious poetry, abounding in the usual allusions and more fine descriptive poetry.
ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA
NALADIAR
Naladiar is more for formal and literary in style, and contains verses of much merit and high ethical content.

ETTUTOGAI
The life of the peasant and the scene of the countryside, the bustle of the town and the ruthlessness of war, are depicted in the Ettutogal (The Eight Anthologies) as though from direct experience, and with no formal unrealistic idealization.
