Out Law Star

When a mysterious woman by the name of Hilde asks for the assistance of Gene Starwind, (a jack of all trades) and Jim Hawking (programming prodigy). The three of them embark on a colossal journey that ultimately takes them to the stars and beyond. When Gene, Hilde, and Jim discover an android with the power to lead anyone to the "Galactic Leyline" (a place that with holds everlasting knowledge and rumored to have tons of jewels). It's an all out race through space to save themselves from pirates, authorities and outlaws with the same goal as themselves. Mission objective: Reach the Galactic Leyline…but in order to do so, Gene must utilize in the best space technology and match wits with wits against merciless foes!

Eclectic…is the word I would give this series. I really liked it because it isn't like any other anime I've ever seen. The characters are fun to watch, believable, and well built. What I really liked about this series is that it actually got better along the way. The plot and characters develop extremely well during the series. The animation is genuine Japanese style. The backgrounds/characters are very rigid, customary wide eyes, pointy jaws, everything one would want in an anime. There isn't any CGI in Outlaw Star, but I don't think it's really needed. The colors are very clear, and the series looks recent. However, this isn't eye candy, there are scenes where the characters are really distorted (not because of comical relief). In comparison with other animes, I would say that Outlaw Star closely resembles the animation used in Gundam Wing (when I say this I mean colors and objects, not characters and plot!).

Speaking of the plot, this series is original, yet cliché in every way possible. The story is about a space cowboy that embarks on a journey of danger. There are lots of shootouts and bar scenes, but the series is still unique. Gene Starwind isn't your average space cowboy…he's an outlaw, and it shows. Gene doesn't always play the good guy; he doesn't always act understanding and do the right thing. I think that's what makes his character so believable. Another reason why the character development is so great is because all of the characters are completely different from each other. Not only are they completely different from each other, the characters in Outlaw Star balance each other quite well. For example Gene is the complete opposite of Sazuka and Jim. Gene is wild and very easygoing. He drinks a lot, likes to pick up girls, very open etc. Sazuka is calm quite, respectful and thoughtful. The two personalities clash every now and then, which added comical relief to a lot of situations. Overall, the character development is definitely one of the more positive things in this anime.
