 A healthier lifestyle requires a little planning!


Step 3:  Make YOUR plan

Many plans fail because they don't work for YOU. 
The only plan that will work for you is the one you make for yourself.

If you followed step 2, you should now have a list of your good & bad habits and what you want to do - these are your GOALS.  To achieve any GOAL you need to make a PLAN.  

Look at your "Goals":   
“How can I achieve my goal?”, 
“What do I need to do?” and “When will I do it?”.

TOP TIP:  Be realistic & be specific
e.g. if you want to loose weight: how much weight? how will you do it and when?  Also, seek advice on how to do it from experts.  For most people, it is better to loose weight slowly by exercising more and eating better foods and let your body adjust gradually.  Be careful to warm up properly and avoid the "burn out" by doing too much too quickly.

For example, your overall GOAL might be to do more exercise, so say what you want to achieve and plan "How" & "When":

Do more exercise (at least 30 minutes a week, this month), and loose 3 pounds

Check if OK with my GP.
Go to the gym with friend & ask the trainer for advice

Join aerobics class every Tuesdays after work (arrange to leave early).
Also start eating healthy foods (GOAL2)


Complex Goals:
If your goal is complicated, you may need to break this down into smaller steps.

For example, your overall GOAL might be to reduce stress at work, but you may need to look at several plans & check "How" & "When"

I'll break this into 2 plans, now

Plan 'A':  Can I start working smarter? If I start work earlier & finish earlier I can get more done in less time Talk to boss next week about starting earlier.

Plan 'B':  Can I reduce my workload?

Talk to friends about how they cope.
Find out what the boss thinks.

Ask people at work tomorrow & my boss the day after

You won’t always succeed the first time and you may need several plans, but by making a plan you will start to see problems more clearly and you will eventually find a solution.

You have now finished the first three steps ...

1. The Health Board - the basics of good health in terms of nutrition, exercise & lifestyle
2. You have harnessed your good habits with a few simple lists (and a lot of honesty!) 
3. You have started making a plan that is right for YOU, based on your real goals 

The final step is ...
4. Get Going - you now have a plan and a will to succeed, so what is stopping you?

It is never too late to start to live the life you want to live!
