tutu

I've been looking on the internet for inspiration for Jane and Katie's bedding, and I came across the most fanciful, fantastic website full of wonderful things for kids.  I thought the "poofs" were so cute and knew that Jane would LOVE one.  I decided to try to make one, and it turned out to be a lot easier than I thought.  Here's the link to the website - Posh tots.

project:   tutu

date:       october 15, 2005

labor:      2 hours

budget:

place purchased item quantity price total
dressew tulle 3 meters 2.00 6.00
  ribbon 1 meter 0.49 0.49
  elastic 1 package 1.70 1.70

      subtotal 8.19
      14% taxes 1.15
      TOTAL 9.34

 comments:

  • I got a pair of Jane's pajama pants and stretched the waist as far as it would go, measured it, and then cut a strip of scrap cloth twice the width.

  • I cut the tulle lengthwise, into four long strips.

  • I gathered and pinned one length of tulle to 1/2 of the strip of cloth.  I pinned another length of tulle on the other half of the strip.

  • I sewed the tulle to the strip of cloth, then repeated the previous step to create a second layer.

  • I then pinned a ribbon on the waist band to cover the top of the tulle and the strip of cloth and create a casing for the elastic.

  • I cut a piece of elastic the size of her waist.

  • I sewed the ribbon on, and then fed the elastic through the casing using a safety pin.

  • I then sewed the opening shut!

 notes for future reference:

  • Next time, I think I would use more tulle - maybe even double.  In looking at the pictures on the posh tots website, I figure they must use 6 or 8 meters of tulle per skirt in order to make them so poofy.  I think I'll make one for my niece and use a little more tulle and see how that works!

  • I know I've said this before, but I really need to take some sewing lessons.  My sewing is terrible.  I think that there must be an easier way of making this, but I couldn't think of one, and my knowledge of sewing is so limited!

  • Here's a picture of Jane wearing both hers and Katie's tutus, doing her best ballerina pose.
