| To learn with technology, it is important to consider the learner and not the actual technology. The three focus points of this model are: understanding the learning process, the learning strategies used, and connecting strategies with technology. It is necessary to know how individuals can have a positive learning outcome and the kinds of skills that will be utilized. Then an organizing framework can be devised based on the preferred outcomes of learning (Olgren, 2000). Olgren states the key concepts of learning for the organizing framework of guiding principles are: learning strategies, goals, motivation, relevance, and outcomes. Learning strategies are the process of behaviors and thoughts to accomplish the intended goal. There are three main categories of learning strategies. Cognitive strategies process information, metacognitive strategies plan and manage learning, and affective strategies maintain motivation (Olgren). It should be recognized that strategies and learning styles are not the same. �Learners use certain strategies to accomplish goals. Learners use certain styles because it is how they like to learn� (Olgren, 2000, p. 9). Learning strategies to use with technology are goal-oriented within the process of learning. Initially a student will use an orientation strategy to set goals, understand the tasks, and formulate a plan. Management strategies include maintaining motivation, keeping on track, and obtaining help when necessary. Information processing strategies are similar to cognitive skills; the desired outcome is to gain understanding and apply information. Self-evaluation is a strategy important for learning with technology because there is less interaction and immediate feedback (Olgren). These strategies and technology must be combined when designing learning environments. The principles used should address �intrinsic motivation and provide a clear structure that support learning through technology� (Olgren, 2000, p.11). Orientation materials should provide comfort with the technology. The course should be divided into manageable sections that have applications and activities. Learning should be interactive and allow for self-evaluation the tasks should involve analysis, synthesis, and application. The technology itself should be transparent to focus on learning goals rather than computer operation (Olgren). The principles presented would create a learning environment that contains appropriate strategies for technology-enhanced instruction. The outline for course structure provides harmony with learning goals and the use of technology. Current theory is represented in terms of intrinsic motivation, management, and self-evaluation. Technology is managed effectively in the activities that provide the learner with motivation, direction, and self-discipline. The approach that was taken to connect learning and technology was to consider the learner, strategies, and outcomes for planning and designing. I believe that any educational setting should have that focus and I found the framework was well designed.
