This station, more than any other, shows our social inequalities, which are a mirror of global inequalities. On one bank of the dirty Pasig River is a veritable fortress of billboards, mostly for designer brands and gadgets, while on the other bank rises a huge squatter settlement. Made even more ironic by the huge mural of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the billboard of Pope Benedict XVI saying "God is Love", and Bo Sanchez' poster of his project "Think Rich, Pinoy!". I know Bo Sanchez is trying to teach people how to overcome poverty, but taken on its own, "Think Rich, Pinoy!" becomes almost an insult. The irony is straight out of a writer's dream. And whatever hapopened to that "Piso Para Sa Pasig" project of First Lady Amelita Ramos? Was it ever implemented? Where did the funds go? The continued polluted state of the river shows the lack of social (not just political) will when it comes to long-term projects. Why do we seem to have this short attention span? We forget our problems and our history so easily. Again, I'm angry and confused. What can we do about it?
