The Araneta center is huge dome amongst dingy square buildings, though in fairness some were renovated a few years ago. This ares used to have a reputation for being a favorite of muggers. But it HAS been rehabilitated to a point. Gateway Mall looks lovely with its clear glass dome. But it looks out of place among the old, dusty, smelly ukay-ukay shops. Globalization really is uneven. I wonder why they built Gateway there in the first place. To clean up Cubao's image? It worked, but only to a point. I still don't feel very safe there.+ photos
