From Gandalf:
(after Frodo laments about being given the burden of the ring)

"So do all who see such times, but that is not for them to decide -all we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."
and
(when Frodo wishes Gollum dead-and incidentally Ian McKellen's favorite quote too)

"It was pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live deserve death and some that die deserve life. ....Even the very wise cannot see all ends. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many."

I like the first quote because it reminds me that as a christian God may call me to do something that I think is difficult or impossible, or I am reluctant to do. It is my decision, but I need to decide to do it anyway.

The second quote can be compared to many things biblical. Only God can see the final outcome - all ends. In the 'Fellowship' Gollum still had a major part to play at the end (book 3). Sauron is defeated as a direct result of this. God can use even the enemy's designs to bring about His sovereign plans if we let Him.
Romans 8:28 - "And we know that all things work together for the good to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose."

Aragorn:
"If by my life or death I can protect you, I will. You have my sword"
(council of Elrond in the movie - found in the book elsewhere)

"I would have gone with you to the end, into the very fires of Mordor"
(just after Frodo escapes Boromir's lapse in judgement - again in the movie, cannot find it
in the book)

What can I say, I'm a hopeless romantic and the first quote brings it out in me. The second quote is powerful if you equate Mordor with Hell.

Frodo:
"I know what I have to do, it's just that I'm afraid to do it"

Many of us are afraid of things that come up in our lives, and making decisions is especially difficult when you know what the right decision is but you are afraid to start on that particular path - pray about it, do it and trust in the Lord to sustain you in that decision!

Boromir:
"It is a strange fate that we should suffer so much fear and doubt over so small a thing."

Boromir looked upon the ring superficially, as a small thing, not realizing how much power it held over people. If you equate the ring with sin, evil, wrongdoing, whatever you chose to call it, it always seems such a little thing, but it can take over your whole life and can have devestating consequences.

"Have you ever been called Home by the clear ringing of silver trumpets? One day our paths will lead us there."
This quote is slightly taken out of context, I omitted the first sentence. It reminds me of christians being called home to heaven. 1 Corinthians 15:51 and 52 says: "Behold, I show you a mystery; we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed. In a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed."

Galadriel:

"Even the smallest one may change the course of the future"

This statement reminds me of Isaiah 55:8 - "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are my ways your way, saith the Lord." God uses over and over not the greatest but the smallest to accomplish great deeds - Moses and Pharoh, David and Goliath. The 'felllowship' didn't fight fire with fire, but looked to salvation in the smallest, unlikeliest of places - the smallest, weakest one.
