This is a letter written by Peter Jackson. For a larger image of it click here. Peter Jackson and his wife Fran Walsh spent 7 years of their life, writing and developing the scripts, and taking to various people to produce. Most people would not commit to two movies, which is how they had it figured. Finally, they took it to New Line Cinemas who asked why he wasn't doing it in three movies. When they created Hobbiton, they went in a year ahead of filming and created and planted things. That is why things look so real in the movie -they are! Many critics have said watching the movie feels like you are watching history. You are - it just hasn't happened yet. If you compare the book to certain stories in the bible, (mainly Revelation and Daniel) the stories have a definite parallel. The book(s) mirror end times events. (takes you to the page - finding God in Lotr) (still under construction - sorry) Many critics, and articles have praised the original story by Tolkien as having stood the test of time, and marvel at the fact that it is still relevant to millenium people (the books were written in 1965). The fact is that God can use people's words even years after they have been spoken or recorded. My opinion as to why the movies have done so well: -they had a great crew of actors who really formed a fellowship during filming, -everyone involved in the project believed in it -there is no one single person or character that shines above the rest, they all have equal importance and equal share -they started out with great material -the material reflects the inherant struggle of good against evil, and especially after the events in New York in 2001, people' s minds have been turned toward that struggle - they are beginning to realize that it is real |
