Early in May we went to San Diego for a reunion with Dave's family.
We all wanted to get together before Matthew left for 2 years on a
mission to Guam. Melanie's favorite vacation spot is San Diego, so for a
year she planned this trip. She & Sam did a great job organizing the
first "Richard & Glenene" family reunion. Dave sewed this giant red duffle bag to transport our boogie boards. It was big enough that Dave could fit inside it, so now we call it the "body bag". |

Funny story: Heavy rain slowed our drive to the West Palm Beach airport, and we began to be afraid we would miss our flight. When we couldn't find a parking spot, Dave dropped me off with the luggage while he went to park the car. (We had 5 very heavy bags with everything from snorkel gear to board games.) I slowly rolled them all from the garage to check in, stopping every 25 feet to catch my breath. When the luggage was checked, we ran to the gate, only to find....what? The plane was delayed an hour...due to rain! Aahhhhh!

Thursday morning we went with Melanie and Sam and kids to a farmer's
market. There were flowers, citrus, garden vegetables, Greek and Mexican
food. We sampled roasted nuts, sweet potato breads, flavored hummus, and
fudge. We ended up buying sweet pea flowers, iris, dried peaches and
mint honey - yum! Afterwards, we walked through these flowers to the pier in Oceanside. (Our condo was in Oceanside, not San Diego, and only a five minute walk to the beach.) Spring was a great time to visit southern California, because there were flowers everywhere! Even though it was a sometimes overcast and the water chilly, it was very beautiful. |

Here Dave holds his nephew Nathan Jarvis, a.k.a "the climber", who was
constantly trying to slip through the pier's railings. The pier is twice as long as the Florida Juno pier. We saw lots of big gulls and in the water, 2 dozen surfers in black wetsuits trying to catch waves. That afternoon almost everyone arrived, and we went to the beach. We went every day, sometimes twice. |
Here I am with my board. The boogie boarding was awesome, because the
Oceanside beach is very flat, sloping gradually into the Pacific. The
waves are long and uniform, and to catch a wave gives you a long ride
all the way back to shore. Wheeeee! The beach has very fine sand with almost no shells, only a few round black stones. The sand is tan and black with gold flecks. The water was cold, but it was worth it! |

Friday morning we went on a short hike that ended at a lake. There were
probably 2 dozen wildflowers in bloom, of which Dave and I took 2 dozen
pictures. Here is the original family (plus little Sammy): Dave in straw hat, Danny in ball cap, Melanie in front in black, Julie in sunglasses, Matthew with the red mop, and Jill in back, plus Mom and Dad. They are a tight crew who get along better than a bunch of bananas. |
Matthew accidentally dropped his shoe in the creek, and we laughed as he
had to slosh downstream after it. It wasn't the only wacky event. Sammy was lost for 10 scary minutes. Danny had a sudden bout of a childhood illness. We were rained out trying to cook Dutch oven cobbler on the beach. Our Mother's Day present almost died when we found Walmart closes at 10 pm in California. And Mom's turn to cook ended up as Sunday breakfast on Mother's Day. Oops! Oh well! |

Danny and Karen and little Kali at the beach again. The sand was so firm you could roll a stroller over it.
These are two fantastic parents: ever since Kali's difficult birth, they've worked hard to keep her alive and growing and to give her love. She's a year old now, and when I saw her for the first time, I loved her too. She's a little doll.

Friday night all the adults except Jill went to the San Diego temple to accompany Matthew as received his own endowment. It was a fantastic moment with the whole family gathered at the end. The temple is a beautiful place learn about the connection between heaven and earth and the eternal nature of families.

Saturday we went to the San Diego Zoo. Despite the small challenge of
keeping everyone together and fed and happy, we had a fantastic time
seeing the animals together. Especially the sleeping pandas. Here's Sammy watching the hippo as it swam through it's tank. A great part of the zoo was the double-decker bus tour, and tram ride, which saved lots of walking. We enjoyed the sea lion show, and I liked the scrapbooking stand with zoo-themed supplies. |
Here I am in a giant bamboo stand. I loved the plants in the zoo as much
as the animals. (I must say, we decided, attractions aside, that the famous San Diego zoo has close to the same animals and lush landscaping as the San Antonio or Houston zoos--but at three times the price. I recommend that my Texas friends take advantage of local zoos.) |

Here Dave is with his sister Julie after church. We went to Mom's
cousin's ward in Oceanside, who kindly gave us women with bags and
chocolate for Mother's Day, which we quickly devoured. No, not the bags. After church, we gave Mom her present: an 8x10 framed photo of us at the zoo the day before. Then we had a very touching testimony meeting, followed by a family council about our next reunion, set for 2007 in Florida. |

Sunday night was the talent show. (I insisted on it because the
Robertson family is so talented, though they are reluctant to do
anything serious.) The funniest one was the Jarvis family singing "Jingle Bells", while Nathan ran laps around them. They also pretended to be zoo animals who got popcorn for doing stunts. Sam talked about the board games he's invented. Melanie and Jill did a head/legs pregnancy workout. Melanie, Jill, and Mom sang a round. Danny's talent was baking his famous cookies, but when they didn't turn out, he served Oreos. Mike and Sam, the 'brothers-in-law', proved their lack of talent by singing Happy Birthday to Julie as badly as they could. Here's Dad played his harmonica. (Even with his 'serious' talent, he likes to be funny--such a Robertson!) |
Julie read a children's story and brought her first scrapbook. I sang
Someone Like You a capella. Dave, Matthew and I performed a
Harry Potter movie spoof with paper puppets, which was funny, but
unrehearsed and too long. Dave showed off the body bag, and recited-read
his favorite poem The Lady of Shallot.
The last number was a classic family skit: "Sweep, sweep". Here at the end, they're chanting "He's dead. He's dead. He's dead he's dead he's dead!...Now we don't need the money for the mortgage on the farm!" |

Monday we went to La Jolla coast. On top of the cliffs is a beautiful
park with a perfect lawn and wacky trees.
After lunch, most of us snorkeled in a little bay. Those of us who had contact lenses saw big orange fish (Garibaldi--CA state fish) and other fish and sea grass and people's legs. Those who had to take off their glasses only saw the orange fish. We doggie-paddled quickly to stay warm, and had fun riding the big waves. |
Before we snorkeled, we walked up the coast to a protected cove where seals gather and take naps. They kept popping in and out of the water and caterpillaring up the beach. The babies were especially cute! There were probably 80 of them, some not 10 feet from us up on the walkway.
All week we played board games. Sam Jarvis is a board game collector and
inventor, and we all like them too. We played Blockus, Beans, and
Amen-Re. Ticket to Ride is one of our favorite games, although we call it "the train game". We had a train game tournament Monday night. Sam was expected to, and did, win. I got to the winner's final game, but came in last. Oh well, it was fun! Tuesday we reluctantly flew home. It was a fantastic vacation. |
