e-SCRAPBOOK
Jeff came to visit us here during his spring break in April. I'm going to tell about Jeff's visit backwards: from the end to the beginning.

But first you have to know this: when our parents visit, they like to do quiet, mature things with us, like tour museums, or look at the beach. But Jeff wanted to do all the fun, physical stuff, yahoo! I almost had to drag him off the beach our last day here...

Unfortunately, during most of his visit, the ocean was so calm all we could do was go swimming. There weren't enough waves to use the boogie boards. I took this picture of Jeff after the three of us went to the beach one evening.

The day before Jeff left (Tues), there were finally some good waves, and he immediately became an expert. In fact, right after that, he wanted to try surf boarding!

They were the biggest waves I'd ever tried. I rode several good waves, but I mistimed a few and I tumbled to shore. I came home with scrapes on my knee and thigh and 2 cups of sand in my swimsuit! But Jeff and I also came back with sunburns, because we were having too much fun and stayed out too long.

Monday we celebrated Dave's 28th birthday with a BBQ and some friends. I owe Jeff  one for assembling the BBQ grill (one of Dave's presents). With something like 5,320 pieces and minimal instructions, he did it in less than an hour. (I'm sure there's a realty TV show for this kind of thing, and that Jeff could win it.)

Dave got a lime cake with lemon frosting , which I made by adding too much lime juice to a white cake mix. Good thing for Dave's homemade Oreo ice cream...

Saturday we took an airboat tour of the Everglades. Too cool! Jeff wanted to see alligators in Florida, and we saw a dozen, big and small. (None of them were prowling around attacking small animals, but that's ok.)

The airboat was loud, but it skimmed right over the water. With all the tall grass and quiet (when the boat was off,) it was so peacefully remote and untouched. Just ignore that cell phone tower in the distance.

We saw several large (5 foot) blue herons, medium tri-colored herons, terns, egrets, and a few turtles. The guide said he thought snails here predicted hurricanes.

The birds pictured left are black-necked stilts. The guide said that after they pick a spot to nest, they gorge themselves on grass seed, then regurgitate it around their spot. In a short while, the grass grows up to protect their nest--clever little birds!

Thursday we went to the beach to learn kite boarding from a Hayden Hulley, a really nice guy in my ward. Some other kids were there, too.

April is not the beach's most beautiful time of year, since all the dead seaweed washes up on the beach. It's clumpy mossy seaweed, but it's fun to throw at each other when you get in the water!

First Hayden taught us how to control the kite. Jeff learned quickly how to pull the bar left or right to get the kite to turn and circle. (It operates like a trick kite you might have flown, only bigger.)

There wasn't enough wind to pull a board through the water. So Hayden and Rochelle showed that you can get the kite pull your body through the water (shown left.) But the wind wasn't right for that either. Oh well! We played frisbee and had fun anyway.

We also went to Juno pier, where we got a picture of this seagull with frilly hair. We also taught Jeff how to play the "train game", went shopping, watched movies, got Italian ices, went to Institute class, ate at the Dune Dog, and just had a good time.

Thanks to Mom and Dad for sending Jeff down here, and thanks to Jeff for coming and hanging out with us!
