e-SCRAPBOOK
  Misc 2007

In January we bought our first piano. It's name is Chico, after the Marx brother who played the piano. It's a black, used, full upright Knabe, with a nifty practice-mode lever (which dampens sound, but not keys).

It sounds beautiful, especially the base. We've loved playing it. When the apartments around us are not rented, I can really pound it out without disturbing anyone. And now I can teach piano lessons in my home.

Oh, and of course, we taught Smokey how to read music and play David Lanz.

The Haases invited us to a hockey game. I had never been to one, it was great! More continuous action like soccer, not baseball. We made fun of the cheerleaders and wished we had a mini Goodyear blimp.

Artfest by the Sea 2007. Every March, it's free to look at what you can't afford (not the view. The art.) We got a tan for free, and stored all of the beautiful art in our heads.

We got tickets a spring training game at our local Roger Dean stadium. We watched the Baltimore Orioles beat our Florida Marlins in the beautiful March Florida weather.

Our church scout troup sponsored a Pine Wood Derby contest. Dave cut ours into his favorite "wedge" shape. I was in charge of decoration, but all I could think of was "wedge of cheese". The label says "Swiss Family Robertson Dairy Farms. Proud of the holes in our wheels since 1977. Exactly 5.0 oz, $2.99." It's all shrink wrapped. The letters under the barcode say "WIN", although I don't think we came close.  A lot of adults & kids in our ward had awesome & funny designs. We had a good time.

Thanks to the Food Network, new cookbooks, a tropical climate, a new food dehydrator, and an easily-bored palate, I've taken up cooking.

Here I'm about to chop a Florida avacado, or "alligator pear", which is bigger than both of my fists and going into a black bean salsa. I've also tried citrus cream cheese, Rio Grande steak rub, stuffed mushrooms, pumpkin cheesecake, sundried tomato marinade, etc.

Here I'm standing in line at 11:30 pm, July 20, 2007 with my voucher for the midnight release of the last Harry Potter book: Deathly Hallows. There were about 200 people, including adults and children, but lots of older teens, whom I assume have grown up with Harry.

Dave and I were very excited to read it, and worried about who might die. Dave kindly let me read it first, after he read the last several pages. We loved the last book. Harry Potter will be required reading in our home.

During the summer, our hot water heater began leaking out the bottom, and Dave had to rescue us.

It has been the hardest home repair project to date. Dave went to Home Depot 5 times that day, and was not a happy camper! If any inanimate object deserved Dave's anger, it was our water piping.

The water shut-off valve, unfortunately, isn't outside; it's inside that closet, and right below where it would've been easy to saw off the pipe and install new piping. He did so much soldering and patching, drywall replacement, and hauling the new heater in and out. But he finally conquered it. What a great guy!

Beginning in August, I began babysitting Gianna for a school teacher whose husband belongs to our church congregation. Conveniently, he also works across the street from our house. She was 6 months then, and supercute.

It took a month to figure out a regular nap schedule, but thanks to a lot of good advice, and baby sleep books, we did it. She walks, falls down a lot, talks, and copies me. Gianna's a fun little buddy to have in our home!

In October, my car was hit by a jag whose driver didn't see me when she tried to cross the road. My car did a donut, but besides my small headache, no one got hurt. Luckily, Gianna wasn't in the car, since it hit the carseat side.

Unfortunately, our 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage was totaled. It was the second green sedan that we had had totaled, so no more of those!

Dave let me pick my car. I wanted a compact car--no boats, and no high-centered tall things. But I love hatchbacks, and was hoping for a car with a moonroof and more cargo room. I liked Dodge Calibers, Mazda 3's, and Scion xA's, but they cost more than our pay-cash-stay-out-of-debt budget allowed.

We bought this 2002 PT cruiser from a nice lady who once fit 5 tubas in it. It's got leather seats, power sunroof, more power than my last car, and two dozen more features I love. Even Dave's been impressed with how much more I care about my car, since I got to pick it out.

For our church Halloween party, Dave wanted to go as a palm tree. He did, complete with coconuts and monkey. Very fitting.

I wanted to be like Dave and do something Florida-ish. An alligator costume was too hard to sew in 2 days, so I went as a bird of paradise flower.

My sister and I finally published my grandpa's personal history. We put in a lot of hours, and grandpa was helpful the whole way. Grandparents truly live in a different world from ours. And learning about my great-grandparents explained a lot about my mother and grandpa: very quiet, good.

We replaced our master bath vanity, and are pretty proud of ourselves. See it on our First Home page.
