If you want to fit a DOHC 2L engine instead of the Pinto into the standard chassis the these are the problems you should be aware of: The engine will fit ok alas the gearbox will not fit between the two down tubes of the chassis, I fitted a type 9 gearbox to the engine with 9mm machined off the flywheel to get the clearance to get the clutch to work correctly, but an MT75 gearbox can be fitted with some small cut-outs made to the central down tubes of the chassis with some plates welded over to make the gap slightly wider for the gearbox selector frame to fit through.(modified prop shaft needed for this) Engine mountings are the same so no problem there. The exhaust is on the passenger side so the supplied exhaust will no fit without modification. I have cut it in two places either side of the bends so the tubes can be twisted around and clamped to fit, the tail pipe will then point upwards towards the body, cut it off and weld it back on in the correct position. (as I intend having a stainlees steel exhaust made to fit when the car is on the road, cutting the exhaust was of little concern). You will also need to cut a hole in the passenger side panel for it to exit from the engine bay, if you have ordered your kit your hole will be on the drivers side which you will need to cover up (a nice louvered vent would look nice). The carb gets in the way of the servo so I had to use the pedals and servo from an E reg Fiesta to allow the servo to be mounted on the passenger side above the exhaust manifold to a new plate welded to the chassis in front of the battery tray.(if you use a DOHC injection engine I am told this mod is not needed). A bracket has to be made to fit the alternator on the oposite side of the engine using a shorter V belt as the steering shaft is in the way. Newer kits to the one I have are supplied with a different steering rack and shaft so you might get away with repositioning it on the same side. The last thing that remains to do is to shorten the sump as this is very low to the ground, but this is the same for the pinto engine, the problem is it is cast and I havn't worked out what to do with it yet. If you use an injection engine and cut a hole in the bonnet for the EFI unit ot fit through the engine can be raised on it's mountings to give a better clearance at the sump. If you don't mind a bit of messing around it can be done. |
