Donor car
My donor car was purchased in September 2000, a 2.0 GL DOHC  with 2 months tax and MOT and 54k miles on the clock for the exorbitant sum of �20. The car was running but very noisily and would not tick over, my guess was that the valve timing was out, possibly the chain tensioner. Thinking this could be recified fairly easily I parted with my hard earned cash and drove it the short distance home.
This was easier said than done with the revs having to be kept above 2000 to prevent the engine cutting out, traffic lights and junctions became a test of coordination having to operate three pedals with two feet. Once home the car was parked in the carport out of the way (well 2/3 of the car fitted into the carport due to various items of junk stacked against the back wall). To make room on our short drive for our other cars to park some of the junk was thrown out to enable the rest of the car to get under the carport and off the drive. This is when disaster struck. When reversing the car the 2 foot required to move front of the car off the drive it cut out and would not start again. After removing the timing cover the reason became apparent, the timing chain had snapped. Decided to remove the engine to find out the full extent of the damage caused and condition of internal components.   
With the engine removed and stripped down, parts of the idler sprocket on the timing chain tensioner arm were found in the sump. The timing chain had been running on the idler sprocket bearing and being smaller in diameter the tensioner plunger had fully extended leaving a small amount of slack in the chain (hence, valve timing out and not ticking over). Extent of damage - three inlet valves bent, two hydraulic cam followers u/s, timing chain snapped, timing chain tensioner plunger u/s, timing chain guide broken and timing chain tensioner sprocket broken into 5 pieces (the cause of all the problems). Makes you wonder why it is made from hard plastic and not metal. With the rest of the internal components in good condition, found the parts required to repair the engine from various sources at a total cost of �72 including two core plugs. Engine rebuilt and replaced back into car to to check repair and other possible problems,  now running like a dream. Seems a shame to break it up.
