Outdoor activities listings

There are a huge number of outdoors sports on offer in the prefecture. Paragliding, hiking, scuba diving, white water rafting, fishing, canoeing, horse riding, motor-biking, rock-climbing and much more! Visit the steaming green crater lake at Mt Aso, swim in the clear water pools in Kikuchi gorge, head to Hitoyoshi to navigate one of the fastest rivers in Japan, dive in Amakusa and see the coral reefs, or visit the golden sandy beaches in Ashikita

Attractions

Visit the prefecture theme park Mitsui Greenland, take a dolphin watching cruise in Itsuwa. Walk around the acclaimed Kumamoto castle, see the latest contemporary art displays at the CAMK museum, relax in the beautiful Suizenji garden or place a bet at the Arao horse racing track.

Onsens

Experience some of the best onsens in Japan at Kurokawa - highlights include the cave onsen at Shinmeikan and the communal pool at Yamabiko. Visit Jigoku onsen in Aso to bath in thick sulphuric mud. Travel to the Kyusenkaku hotel in Ueki to enjoy a sand bath or visit Kumamoto City onsen to see fantastic city views.

Festivals

Music lovers can go to the Aso rave in late summer, or Japan's largest country music festival held in October. Go to the Aso Fire Festival in March to swing a flaming straw bale around your head!
