Batten Batten Lake Ezo

This onsen center is great for couples looking for a private bath - there are a large number of family tubs (10 in total) costing 1800yen for 50 minutes. Opening times; 1200-0900 (from 1500 on first and third Thursdays and open 24hrs on weekends and holidays.) Costs; 450yen. Phone number; 0963798111 It is just off route 57 after the bridge crossing Lake Ezo. It is convenient for trips to suzenji park, Lake Ezo or the city zoo.

Oyuland peaceful

This is the most expensive onsen center in the prefecture (1600yen). It is however, really convenient after long drives on the Kumamoto expressway. It has a huge number of inside baths (10 in total) as well as a nice outdoors wooden tub. Directions; On route 57, just before the Kumamoto IC

Aso

Winus

The outdoor spa is a simple concrete tub - but it has fantastic views of the Aso range. It is convenient for the drive to Nakedake crater. It is on the 299 off the 325 south Aso road. Opening hours; 1000-2200 (winter -2130). Costs; 400yen. Phone number; 0967672277

Kugino hot springs center

There are good views of the Aso range from the outside wooden tubs. They also have an "utase yu." (where you sit under falling hot water -great for back massages!) It is 1.5km from Choyou station and 1.5km from route 325

Sizen

This is a large spa center - with a big (almost swimming pool sized!) circular inside tub.
It is located just off the 325 on the 111 heading towards the crater.

Northern Kumamoto

Kusamakura Onsen (Tensui)

Kusamakura is especially nice at night when the strawberry greenhouses below are lit up. It offers six baths, two of them outdoor and a sauna. The bath has three large bamboo facets about ten feet in the air. If you sit under these facets, the falling water will massage you. If driving, follow the signs from the 501, otherwise take the bus from the Kotsu Center in Kumamoto. The bus leaves from platform 21, bus number 11 and is labeled Tamana Station. Two busses daily will stop at the onsen but these buses leaves the Kotsu center around 9:00am and 1pm (and are marked �� on the bus schedule). Otherwise, choose any of the number 11 buses and get off just after the 7-11 (fare should be about 660yenand walk up the hill. It should take you about 10-15 minutes). Opening times; 1000-2100. Shiyougen (Tamana)

There is a medium outside pool in a garden and a 3m high waterfall.
It is 2km north of Tamana Station.

Miyabaru (Ueki)

There is a nice walled outside area surrounded by trees. There is back-massaging water from bamboo chutes.
It is on Rt 3 - about 7km north from Ueki IC.

Kikuchi Kanko Hotel (Kikuchi)

The outside spa is in a large rocky pool - sheltered by a wooden roof. It is surrounded by woodlands.
It is on the junction between the 23 and 387 in Kikuchi.

Dai ichi Kaku (Kikuchi)

There is a large inside modern spa - and a walled outside area.
It is on the 33, driving north from Kikuchi town. It is just before the Kikuchi Kanko Hotel.

Miyuki no yu (Sekia Hills)

This comprehensive facility has a huge swimming pool sized outside onsen - with great views of a nearby mountain range.
Directions; It is located in the Sekia Hills complex. Follow the signs from Nankan IC - driving south on the 5.

Hinagu Spa

There is a modern black-tiled inside spa- and the outside baths are in a nice gardened area.
The spa is located next to Hinagu station, along route 3.

Otachimisaki

The onsen is really convenient for post-beach bathing - it's a two minute drive from the beach area. The outside bath gives great panoramic views of the surrounding area. The onsen is located on the hill above Otachimisaki beach.

Healthy Park Ashikita

Healthy Park is a large and modern spa center. The spacious inside baths have a selection of jet-spas and waterfall features. There is also a swimming pool and restaurant. A combination onsen and swimming pool ticket costs 650yen. It is located on route 3, across the river from Yunoura train station.

The modern spa center has large inside baths. It is located on the 266 driving towards Amakusa.

Benitori sansen (Hitoyoshi)

The inside baths are large, and the outside baths are set in a walled sculptured garden. It is also a cheap place to stay - a bed for the night costs 4200yen. It is on the 219 - close to Nishi Hitoyoshi train station.
