Awala-Yalimpo, French Guiana |
Awala-Yalimpo is located
northeast of Mana, turtles can be
seen there early spring laying eggs, hatching, and returning o the ocean
at "La Plage des Hattes."
There's a local museum that has information about the turtles as well. |
This time
for my second trip (2002) to French Guiana I was here during the season, but
probably missed seeing the turtles by a few hours. Found the shell from
turtle that already returned to the ocean. They have also previously been spotted laying
eggs back in Kourou near the Hotel Des Roches. |

leatherback turtle arriving at the beach before laying eggs. |
|
We were startled at first
when Scott almost ran into this turtle rushing up the beach to lay her
eggs. Cyrus got a good picture of the big "mother" turtle.
|
The prop team went out to
Awaya-Yalimpo and got to see the baby turtles hatching and making
their way to the ocean. |

night, like not taking flash pictures in it's face. |
