~ RE-STRUCTURING YOUR LIFE ~

One Foot IN - One Foot OUT.

Ah if we could just be kids again, when this was not a problem...

You put your right foot in,
You take your right foot out,
You put your right foot in,
And you shake it all about....

What a lovely game to play in childhood! Sometimes the whole line of children would turn to face the opposite way, and continue the game....

You put your left foot in,
You take your left foot out,
You put your left foot in,
And you shake it all about....

For adults, this Hokey-Pokey game is maddening, especially when you are wanting to DO something -- NOW!

The Quiet-Desperation phase has been so painful for most of us, that we just want to get into our new life already!!   But our physical condition, our emotions, and our thoughts betray us some more --- they argue or fight against us!!!!  First, of course (!) our physical problems or pain dictate every day of our lives, making us often wonder if we can get through a day - let alone make plans for our future!  Then our negative thoughts start in.  You know those, going back years, even to childhood, reminding us of how we think we fail.  And of course, our emotions jump onto the negative side; fear, sadness, depression, uncertainties get in the way of our path and interrupt our progress towards our goals.   And so, it is like we are trying to stand or walk on two feet, with each going in a different direction.  How much easier it would be if both feet were moving towards the same goals, working together on the same plan for our future!

Put your right foot in... put your right foot out....for the person who has had a catastrophic medical problem, the negative thoughts go beyond, way beyond, our personal imperfections!  Illness brings this little whispering voice of "What if I get sicker? What if a blood clot// stroke// heart attack happens again?  (And the biggie...) What if I die?  Now, that may seem silly thinking for most people, but when you are sick, there is the uncertainty of a condition re-occurring or getting worse...and... if you survived a serious illness once, you're apt to fear your luck won't be as good the second time.  With thoughts of cheating death a second time swirling in one's mind, a person naturally thinks of all the precious things that need their focus NOW (before death comes), all the more important things to take care of before the bad thing (death) happens!  Literally a person can feel they are living in the Shadow of Death, like living on the slopes of a volcano which has erupted before, destroying or killing everyone below.  There's a feeling of being so very small in the universe that we don't feel we have a right to believe we might live long enough to create a new life, since we've seen the power of the Universe as able to withdraw life in a second.

So like a teenager at a first dance, we begin an awkward movements from "chronically ill-disabled" to creating a new life for ourselves where we can hopefully gain creative liberation through our passions and maybe earn a living from it too.

In your new dance, hum or sing the words of Hokey-Pokey, remembering that it is as much a song of repetition as it is a song to remember freedom.  As you move through and beyond quiet-desperation, shake out your thoughts, ideas and dreams!  And as you begin to plan to a new life and hit obstacles, remember you'll need to repeat and repeat the same intentions of wanting a new life.  One day, you'll be able to reflect on how far you've come!

Put your right hand in. put your right hand out. put your right hand in and SHAKE IT ALL ABOUT!! do the hokey pokey and turn yourself around! that's what it's all about!
Put your left hand in. put your left hand out. put your left hand in and SHAKE IT ALL ABOUT!! do the hokey pokey and turn yourself around! that's what it's all about!
(And repeat, using every part of your being!)

The title "Onward ~ and ~ Upward" is a "motto" I used as a teenager and young adult --- then forgot about for a number of years.  I feel it is a fitting motto to strive for and a fitting title for the topics of this website.
