PROBLEMS WITH THE BILLING:
Should all four stars' names appear before or after the title?
According to Selznick's contract with MGM, Clark Gable's name was to precede the title (it was a very common clause in stars' contracts with their studios). But Selznick was against segregating Gable, and he believed that whatever was done for him, should also be done for the other principals. He suggested that all four names come under the title with the word "starring".
What should be the relative size of the names of the four stars to the name of the picture?
Usually a star's name would be 75% of the size of the main title. Selznick was afraid that if they did this for all four stars the advertising would come out very messy. He thought it was crucial that the Gone with the Wind not get minimized and suggested the size of 50%.
Eventually...the names of the four stars, under the word "starring", in size fifty percent of the title, followed the film's name on the screen and in all advertising. The alternate version on some posters used words "starring" for Gable, Howard, and de Havilland, and "presenting" for Vivien Leigh.
