ILLINOIS SPOONPLUGGERS
September, 2000
Our next meeting will be held at the Richport YMCA on
Thursday, September 14, 2000 and will begin at 7:30PM. We'd like
to welcome Nick, an old member who has rejoined the club, back
into the fold. He recently fished Heidecke with Jim where they
took a couple of respectable smallies. Nice to have you back,
Nick!
13 members and 2 future Spoonpluggers, Brian and
Kevin attended the August meeting. Fishing reports dominated the
session and we could have probably gone on for a couple of more
hours to do justice to everyone. All those in attendance had been
out with some nice catches reported, as witnessed by the pictures
that were circulated. Jerry reported on attending the Michigan
outing and fishing in Minnesota and Indiana. Joe took some nice
muskies from the Chippewa flowage and teamed up with Gino to
christen his new boat with some muskie fishing. Joe's son Kevin
described the flipping technique he used to take some bass on the
recent family vacation to northern Wisconsin, much to the surprise
of his grandmother!
Dave reported catching some shallow water spring bass by
doodling/noodling in some local lakes and Gino checked out some
potentially new waters up in Wisconsin while breaking in the new
boat. Jim P. is still trying to unlock the secrets of the big lake
across the border with its clear water and deep breaklines. Wayne
reported on a successful outing to the cooling lakes for some
white bass and striper action. George recounted an outing to
southern Illinois and his awe and admiration at being able to fish
with Jim D. on a recent trip to Michigan. Craig reports that he
now feels confident when he goes out and how he expects to catch
fish. He mapped a structure on one of the cooling lakes where his
wife Jenny caught her first muskie. Nice job, Craig! Phil reported
on his successful trip to Wisconsin where the northerns were very
cooperative and kept him and his dad occupied for the week. Harvey
ventured out east again and reported on the mixed results for
walleye. Tom sent in some nice pictures from southern Wisconsin
where he's taken northerns with the help of his son and daughter.
In a recent letter, Tom reported:
"We went fishing on Sunday 8/13 all day, Monday 8/14
afternoon, Tuesday 8/15 afternoon. Winds were out of the south on
Sunday and west on Monday and Tuesday. Sunday we caught 22
northerns/Monday 10 northerns/Tuesday 12 northerns. All were
caught on weedy points with access to deep water. The largest was
35 1/2 "on Sunday. My son caught his personal best on Monday, 32",
He is completely hooked on spoonplugging. He does everything
himself, no help from dad now. I even had to give him his own
tackle box with spoonplugs in it."
Way to go, Tom. It's great to see that your son has
taken so well to spoonplugging. You must be a good teacher! Rick
reported on a favorite lake where he's now getting into the bass
as well as some quality pan fish. Frank talked about water color
and how it related to his fishing success as well as drawing out
the structure situation and describing it. Thanks for sharing,
Frank!
The Illinois Spoonpluggers would like to extend our
deepest sympathies to Wayne on the recent death of his son, David.
The club will make a donation on his behalf to the American Cancer
Society. If you would like to contribute, please send your check
to Jim D.
FYI: Tom Skilling noted that "Long lasting contrails,
condensation trails from jet aircraft, are important because they
indicate the presence of significant moisture in the upper
atmosphere." To the knowledgeable Spoonplugger they indicate that
conditions are building and light conditions are improving. Be on
the lookout for a good movement!
