Wally's Pre-Mapping Study

By Wally Kulikowski

1 MAP STUDY

· Less than 1000 acres-less study required

· More than 1000 acres-more study required

Note: knowledge of launch facilities & lodging helps eliminate unwanted surprises

2 SCOUTING A LAKE-WORK WITHIN A 700 ACRE RADIUS

· Structures in a closer proximity can be worked more efficiently (short movements will be detected)

· Structure types fish use will be noted and patterns will be established

· Being closer to launch facilities can be a plus (emergencies, gas shortage, etc.)

3 SCOUTING TECHNIQUES-(without lures)

· Swing boat out 50-75 yds (approx.)

· Make passes parallel to shoreline at approx. 10-15 mph. (reduce speed to comfort level)

· Observe shoreline features looking ahead for changes in the terrain

· Glance at the depth finder to note increases or decreases in depth

· When potential structures are located a general analysis can be formulated by making a couple of passes off the structure in most cases when related to small or medium size structures

· Make a quick note of potential sructures by marking down shoreline features for reference purposes (sightings)

· Review your notes and number according to potential

COMMENTS & NOTES

You have now established possible fishing water from trolling water. Your lures will give you the final interpretation in all cases.
