Rockville NYI, Iceland

In my introduction to these galleries, I noted that there was one place I was unlucky enough to spend time in, and this is it: Iceland.  I spent a year at Rockville NYI, Iceland (from June of 1981 to June of 1982) as a member of the U.S. Air Force, and that is where these pictures were taken.

Although my time in Iceland was not all bad, enough of it was to make me cringe sometimes when I think back to it.  Most of my time was spent on site (notice I did not say on base, because Rockville was just a small radar site), and there was not a heck of a lot to do off base anyway.  When we did go off base we had to declare virtually every single item we were carrying with us on a Customs form, and there was a curfew in effect for us.  On top of that, many people there were quite hostile toward us.  So it was less than a picnic there, and that is one reason I did not take many pictures during my stay.

For those of you (U.S. citizens, in this case) who look at the thumbnails below and think this gallery looks really "boring," all I can say is this: try to imagine living there.  These are the kinds of surroundings that many U.S. military members endure while defending your freedom.  So instead of simply thinking this looks "boring," why not show your appreciation by at least taking a quick look at what others are living like so you can live like you do? :)
