This is a road leading south to the Keflavik NATO base, which is a "real" base in the town of Keflavik.  There was another route through the town, but often this was the road we traveled on.  While some people made a point of going to the base as much as possible, most of us did not even get there much.  A lot of us only went there on BX (base exchange) runs or for official business.  The BX runs were done on a bus called the "Rockville Express" on Saturday mornings, and these runs were the only times that we were not required to fill out customs forms for items we carried with us.
