Looking toward the main entrance of Rockville NYI, Iceland (for the life of me, I still cannot remember exactly what "NYI" stands for). As you can see (kind of), the area surrounding the base is part of a huge lava field - it extends at least most of the way toward Reykjavik about 25 miles to the east. The first thing that struck me about Iceland was the 24-hour per day sunshine in the summer. The first night I was there, for example, I woke up because the sun was shining into my face through the window. I thought I overslept and jumped up out of bed - but it was 3:00 a.m.! |
