5. Shelton Brockman , b. 1789 at Albemarle County, Virginia
| Land Warrant 1819
| Land Warrant 1833
|
Shelton was granted land in the southern, later Jackson County, part of Madison County
apparently in exchange for a part of his grandfather's, William, grant on Silver Creek, northwest
of Richmond. A portion of this grant was sold by William Brockman, of Albemarle County,
Virginia to William French. Thomas Brockman
signed as a witness to this deed [Mad. Co. Deed Bk. D]. (The Land Grant to William Brockman
has yet to be found in the record books of Kentucky.)
Supposedly, Shelton Brockman remained in Madison County when his father moved to Greene
County. I find it hard to believe this because Shelton would have been only 11 years old. Unless
he was indentured to someone (no records found) most likely Shelton moved with his father to
Greene County and later moved back to Madison County to settle.
Shelton Brockman is not mentioned in the W.E. Brockman books.

Baker, b. 1793 at North Carolina

name appears in the 1800 Madison Co. Tax List), mother Milly.

| Madison County, KY Bill of Sale, 1796
| Witness, Madison County, KY Deed 1799
|
The earliest mention I have found in Kentucky for Thomas Brockman is a record in the Madison
County Court Order Book A. From Jackie Couture's book, Madison County, Kentucky,
Court Order Book a, 1787-1791, Bowie: Heritage Books, Inc, 1996: Tuesday, 6 July 1790,
"Jane Burton appeared in discharge of her recognizance and on the motion of Elizabeth Willis it
is ordered that the said Jane Burton be bound to her good behavior to all the lige people of this
Commonwealth and in particular to the said Elizabeth Willis. Jane Burton, William West, and
Thomas Brockman came into Court and acknowledged themselves severally bound
unto his Excellency the Governor in the sums following wit. The said Jane in the sum of fifty
pounds and the said William and Thomas in the sum of 5 [pounds] each to be void on
the following conditions towit that the said Jane peaceably behave herself for the term of one
year and a day to all the lige people of this Commonwealth and in particular to Elizabeth Willis."
On 1 October 1796, Thomas Brockman signed a "bill
of sale" to William Hamm in Madison
County, Kentucky [Deed Book D]. Soloman Turpin and Thomas Gully witnesses. This bill of
sale shows that Thomas was living in Madison County in 1796 before moving to Green County,
Kentucky in 1799-1800. This is the second mention of Thomas living in Madison County
where his son Shelton Brockman would eventually own land. Thomas also signed as a witness a
deed for William Brockman, of Albemarle County, Virginia on 6 August 1799 to William
French. Other witnesses were J. Powers and Ann Powers. This land was located on Silver
Creek in Madison County, Kentucky [Deed Book D].
By 1800, Thomas Brockman and his family moved to Greene County where he appears on the
tax list. This area of Greene County would later become Adair County. Thomas would
eventually move to Montgomery County, Illinois with his grandson Samuel Brockman's family.
He would apply for a Revolutionary War pension, denied, in Illinois.
From the Brockman Scrapbook: "Thomas Brockman born in Albemarle County,
Virginia, entered service in 1776 under Capt. John Marks, Col. Charles Lewis Regiment in
General Nathaniel Green's Division of the army, serving for three years; also served under Capt.
Archibald Moon, was in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, Stony Point, and
other small engagements. Came to Illinois, residing in Montgomery County where he was
buried in a little graveyard which is now a pasture owned by Joseph Spinner [1952]. He died
about 1838." (Supposedly, Thomas Brockman was disinterred and reburied in Missouri.)
Pay roll Capt. John Marks Co., 10th Va. under Col. Wm. Davies, month May 1779: Thomas
Brockman, private, paid, 2L."

NOTES:
7. William Brockman , b.ca. 1718, d.ca. 1809 at Albemarle County, Virginia
| Madison County, KY Deed 1799 |
William may have been born in King and Queen County, Virginia. After he moved his
family to Charlottsville, Albemarle County from Orange County, he constructed
a mill. He was a large land owner having tracts in three different counties in Virginia
From the Brockman Scapbook, pgs. 163-164: "William Brockman of Albemarle
County, son of Samuel and Mary,
lived on Priddy's Creek, owned a considerable quantity of land, and had one of the first
mills erected in that section. He died in 1809. A Baptist Church, the predecessor
of the present Priddy Creek Chruch, was on his land and he devised it to the congregation, who
used it as a place of worship.
"We first hear of William Brockman in Spotsylvania County where he witnessed a number of
legal
instruments.
Like his brother, William had a distinctive way of signing his name. In
Spotsylvania,
a deed from
Joseph Collins runs to William Brock. In the deed he and brother Samuel signed, selling
their Albemarle County legacy to John White, a Scottish immigrant, 1779. He signed
again William Brock, "B" as his mark, while the deed was made out in his full name. In
the
deed in which son William, Jr. received land from William Moore and Mary his wife, of Orange,
he witnessed this deed as William Brock, and Junior also signed as Brock. When
William,
Sr. signs his will in 1807,
he does sign in full. The Will was entered for probate in 1809 and I have estimated that
William was born
about 1718 in King and Queen County. He signed as witness of a deed in 1739. In
1762, while
living in Orange, he acquired 400 acres of land in Albemarle County from Robert Duncanson,
purchased from Richard and
Sarah Durrett. In 1782, William, Sr. as he is referred to, bought 100 acres from Ambrose
Dowell. In 1794, he signed a
petition to erect a mill on Priddy's Creek, although he is believed to have had a mill earlier.
In his will he
ordered this mill sold and the proceeds divided. In the transfer of land with brother
Samuel in 1779, his wife signs "Betty Brock", with "W B" appearing in front as identification.
Son William
died intestate, but in a deed from William Brockman, Jr. heirs to John Goss, the names of
Junior's
children are given.
"In 1807, William Brockman executed a power of attorney to son Ambrose Brockman, by which
he was to receive payment for his services, "the same fees
and emoluments which I allowed my son Samuel, deceased". This document was signed
"X" indicating he was no longer able to sign his
name. His will probated 1809, in Albemarle, left property to his grandchildren, children
of
John deceased, to be administered
by grandson Elijah. Three of his sons served in the Revolutionary war.
