RELIGION
Icky.
BIG icky.
Probably the biggest icky within LIFE.
Definitely the most controversial, 'cause let's face it, religion pretty much runs our societies. It always has, but that doesn't suggest that there MUST be a god.
'Religion' by definition is simply a 'system of beliefs'.
That's all.
Pretty general, isn't it?
I realize that most of us hold 'religion' synonymously with words such as 'Christianity', 'church', 'Jesus', etc. Well, those ARE part of THEIR religions. But 'Atheism' is also a religion. And so is 'Agnosticism' and 'Wiccan'.
That's right.
"But Atheism is the disbelief in god! That's not a religion!"
Okay, but we could also say that Atheism is the belief that there is NO god, and their other beliefs support that belief (amongst others), which in turn is a 'system'.
Hence a 'system of beliefs', hence a 'religion'.
Yes, I have had many 'believers' attack me on this theory. But I expect that because it pisses them off. How dare I mention 'Christianity', 'Religion' and 'Atheism' within the same sentence!?
Well, it's quite easy and logical, and until someone shows me the Christian patent on the definition of 'religion', it will remain this way.
Now before we duke it out over what is what, allow me to explain the basics of what all of these labels are. No sense in calling me up to argue unless we know what the hell we are talking about.
CHRISTIAN: A believer
in Jesus as the Christ & son of God... or in the religion
based on the teachings of Jesus. Believer
in God as the
'All-Mighty Being', Creator of
all, etc
ATHEIST:
The belief that it is not possible for a supreme/
omnipotent/omniscient being to exist. Believes there is no
life outside of the planet. Does not believe in a 'soul',
so once we
die....game over.
AGNOSTIC: One
who believes it impossible to know if god exists.
Bascially
needs proof.
Very basic.
Let's go a little deeper.
Atheists also believe there is no life after death, of any kind. They believe THIS is it. When you're dead, you're dirt; no soul, no spirit, no Heaven or Hell. Therefore, they also dispell the idea of religious or spiritual morality, hence, if you fuck up in this life, you're going to hell, or do 'good' and Heaven awaits.
(also, they don't believe in any form of life outside of Earth (aliens, E.T., etc.)
Now, here's the kicker. Most Christians believe that 1 of 2 things are going on with these types of folks. Either they are in denial/haven't been saved yet, OR they are Satanists.
The first is typical of Christian arrogance, while the second is quite a contradiction in terms of an Atheist (remember, they ALSO don't believe in Satan/Hell).
Ironically, both Atheists and Christians think the other is radical and ignorant.
And that brings me to our next group.
Agnostics aren't sure what to believe in. Some need proof of a god while others simply don't give a damn, but won't disqualify the possibility of a god.
Some feel these are the most of the 'openminded' groups. In my experiences, they are certainly the easiest to talk with. They do not indulge in bashing or banging like the actions practiced by our other 2 neighbors. They simply listen and share opinions that can support both sides, though lacking in any based conclusions.
So, where do I fit in?
As I stated before, Agnatheism is a little of both ( I get a kick out of my word processor's inability to recognize the word 'Agnatheism').
In other words, like an Atheist, I do not believe in a god, devil, heaven or hell. BUT, (and this where I usually lose people) I DO believe in infinite possibilities of an 'afterlife', BUT Heaven or Hell are NOT two of them.
Why not?
